dr_jekyll
just a bit of bordum thinking from me but, apart from the obvious exhaust tuning what determins the engine sound of a car. for instance a ferrari f430 v8 revs to around 8k i belive and has a high pitched truly awsome sound a ls6 can rev to around 8k (with tuning) but has a completely different sound harsher almost more mechanical and pure. so why do different engines with the same configuration that can rev to similar heights have so many different sounds. Ian C
I imagine the Ferrari is a flat plane crank and the LS6 a cross plane crank

Swampy442
All to do with degrees of revolution of the cranbk vs firing order. All you ever need to know http://www.projectm71.com/Cross_FlatPlane.htm
Chris Wilson
Cam timing makes a big difference as does compression ratio. Induction noise, or lack of also affects overall sound.
dr_jekyll
so literally they are lots of factors apart from how much gas is being pushed down some pipe. i was at silverstone on the weekend and those f1 engines sound insane as do the gp2 engines.
