RedM
Drivers could pay up to £1.34 a mile in "pay-as-you go" road charges under new government plans. The charges, aimed at cutting congestion, would replace road tax and petrol duty, Alistair Darling has said. Full story here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4610755.stm In one of the comments below the story someone has worked out that it would cost them £1000 per year!! terribleturner
I can't believe it. It really takes the pi$$. Why are they determined discriminate drivers?? Next thing will be to charge pedestrians for walking down High Streets at peak times. So what would be the benefit?? Lower petrol. Less people on the road, which wont happen. Insurance will of course have to go up. It's just crap. And that 1.34 is for example at rush hour on say the M25. So what we need to do is get the whole country to move their working times so as to create a new rush hour time
Fifty
let me guess Im the poor f**ker who pays £200 quid to fit the tracker (his family prob has shares in the Company that makes em) Next some twat will be calculating your av speed; auto ticket issue! Oh and lets not forget the insurance companies who will naturally use data to charge by the mile. What a total tosser; anyone for civil war lol
MARTIN R
What a total tosser; anyone for civil war lol 50 Yeah Im in Most expensive fuel as well, its just rip of Britain getting worse, anyone got information on emigration!!!
Scoboblio
Apparantly this charge "will replace road tax and petrol duty" Yeah right, the day the government abolish fuel tax will be the day Satan ice skates to work.
Timwildman
I think it's a good idea just a shame the government has to always take it too far. Can you imagine all thoes that dont pay insurance, and road tax now paying. It's fair because thoese that use the roads should pay the most. Well thats if the money from the roads actually went on the transport system. It wont happen for at least 10 year anyway.

I wouldn't mind paying something, bu i can't understand how they worked it out?? If you say that a national avergae drive does between 10-12,000 miles a year. And we pay £160 on road tax right. So lets be genrous and say 5p or go as far as 7p a mile. Now that would be fairer wouln't it??
tbourner
It's still better than the £900 a year tax that was mentioned, at least those that don't drive their 'gas guzzlers' very often will have to pay over the top. The problem will be when they just keep putting the prices up, and then introduce speed measurement so you'll end up with 28 NIPs through the post each week!!! I'm also guessing that the top amount they quoted, would be for the centre of citys etc.. with a lower fee else where.
terribleturner
I thought about fuel tax, but somehow i don't think we'll actually see alot of difference if the govemnt have their way. i hope i'm wrong though.
Timwildman
Thats what I mean the idea is good, but we know by the time it happens the in parlement will have ruined it. Just like the CSA and tagging criminals all good ideas if there worked properly, but....
terribleturner
Yeah and the new compulsory ID cards that will hold everything about you and set you back nealry £100 to get it. When's the next flight outta this country?
Bobbeh
Could pay up to £1.34.. ok, whats the lower end too? Could pay as little as what? If this is to remove the tax and duty on fuel i think it will be beneficial to those of us who dont drive a lot.
RedM
I guess people would also look for alternative routes to work and increase road usage in areas that aren't designed for it. As for the whole speeding thing. As I understand it the police and insurers won't be able to access this info due to something in the human rights laws. Someone on a Skyline forum pointed out that having our cars monitered constantly would wipe out vehicle theft but, of course, the police cannot use this information. Best of all, the trial scheme is going to be in Leeds. Woop-de-f**king-do.

When's the next flight outta this country? Isn't it closer to £300 now? Apparently it will take nearly 50 years to create an ID card for everybody if only the projected number of machines are installed. No rush to prevent terrorism then. I'm wondering if the ID card and Pay as You Go ideas will end up like the poll tax. Massively unpopular, expensive and, in the, totally abandoned. Guess who'll be picking up the tab though? Kopite
latest i heard for the ID cards was £400 each i've given up with all the discrimination against drivers. no one will pay £1.34 a mile everyday, without road tax and petrol tax, where's the cash gonna come from then? whoever comes up with these ideas needs a date with a chainsaw! Timwildman
How about pay as you go road tax/poll tax/id/car driving license, we could all have electronic tags in our necks just like cats and dogs...
Dragon
How about pay as you go road tax/poll tax/id/car driving license, we could all have electronic tags in our necks just like cats and dogs... i don't fancy the idea of being wormed.
how_supra
This is a totally crap idea. Does this mean that they are going to take the tax out of fuel prices?? Can't see that happening myself either.
Pete
It might not be too bad.. "2p per mile for driving on a quiet road out of the rush hour to £1.34 for motorways at peak times." Just buy an Evo/Scooby and rally it to work everyday... They'll only be fitted to new cars and I'm sure they'll be hackable.
Bobbeh
Does this mean that they are going to take the tax out of fuel prices?? Can't see that happening myself either. Yes, thats the idea, no fuel tax or road tax.

martynb
It's just another headline grabber while the scum slip something else out which will be totally missed and will happen a lot sooner than 10 years from now. Does anyone keep a count of the number of 3,5 and 10 year plans Blair currently has running? Must be scores.
Syed Shah
Tax on fuel is better. Those who drive more, pay more. Those who pollute more, pay more. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Whitesupraboy2
wont happen prices for everything go up and supprot companies would go out buisness. I have had to drive 500 miles round trip mostly on motorway, sure the company would love that bill
