Whitesupraboy2
Matt Ive just had this done. The lady had a BT point in the house but hadnt used it for 5yrs..she had an NTL box. anyway so £127 connection charge! BT man came out and found 2 breaks in line down road and had to come to house so got him to install new box on wall. He said good chance if been off for while youll always get charged as cables are often rerouted for other houses. i used http://www.quidco.com to get £55 back off the charge when i did it for new lines but down to £20 now for BT new line sorry. Other site i use http://www.topcashback.com may give more. I used these and got o2 broadband...£10 a month, first 3 months free and £100 cashback so they are paying me £10 to have broadband for the year
Whitesupraboy2
Just to add i know he had to work on it..he tried his phone in the house he brings and it failed, so put in his tool tells him where the break is...his words 'not up the bloody poll please not up the bloody pole'
martini
I wrote a full page letter in size 10 type explaining everything down to how the cable will be installed. Size 14 might have helped.

Scoboblio
We had a similar situation in our flat when we moved in - the previous occupants had 'unbundled' the line or something. We took out our line rental with Sky who paid the connection fee that BT wanted about £130 for - they used the same contractors as BT (openworld). Might be worth a phone call if you're not set on having virgin TV.
Ian W
Can't be arsed reading the whole thread from my phone but sky activated my line for me, free of charge (as above on the basis I pay them the line rental)

Matt H
Thanks for all replies. Well, I've managed to ring out a half decent deal from Sky from a company called LDTV (love digital), with a bit of bartering on the phone last night. For £36.50, I’m getting tv, calls and unlimited 20mb broadband and they are going to give me a free Sky HD+ box and install everything for free, including the new line. It’s more expensive than Virgin, without the fibre optics and HD channels (even though I’m getting a HD box, I don’t think I’ll be getting any HD channels as I’m not paying for any of them). Still, it will only be for a year or so I guess until I rent the property out. I just need to stop thinking about how these moron neighbours are costing me extra money each month! grrr.
