neo2810 Posted July 4, 2010 Share Posted July 4, 2010 (edited) I took my car in a few weeks ago to get new pads fitted all round. The brakes were fine to that point. Since then, the brake warning light has come on twice. The first time, I topped up the fluid thinking they had just not topped up enough for the sensitive sensor. On Friday, the light came on again so I checked the brake fluid to find it almost on min. Clearly a leak... Today I checked the wheels, found fluid spillage, took off the wheel and while feeling the little brake fluid pipe end cap (not sure it's tech name) it came off in my hand: Now I have a few questions... Is the garage likely to admit they must have damaged it when fitting the pads? Would I be justified asking them to replace the caliper at their expense, or will this be my expense (due to the age of the car and the fact these are probably really old and worn) and nothing I can do about it? Does anyone have good condition front j-spec (1 pot) calipers for sale? (of course I only need the right hand side one so that would be ideal. They'll probably say it's been OK for a few weeks, so it's just one of those things that happen... and yes, it'll need a replacement caliper. Dnk Posted July 5, 2010 Share Posted July 5, 2010 Its called a bleed nipple and is where you bleed the brake fluid/air out of the brakes. New caliper required. If the garage only changed the pads then they wouldn't have needed to touch the bleed nipple. I'd ask them if the bled the brakes then you can take it from there but if they did surely they would have charged you for doing so ! neo2810 Posted July 6, 2010 Author Share Posted July 6, 2010 To be honest, the garage are a good bunch and I've used them for a few years. They would more than likely own up to breaking something. I've put it down to a brittle caliper and the fact they didn't notice the crack when they did the pads. After failing to fit Tom's Aristo caliper they have ordered a reconditioned replacement for £80 which I'm cool with considering they are not charging me any labour or brake fluid topup.
