Running after 3 years

Hi all, new to the site and have a question.

I have a TT that has been sat for almost 3 years. Plan is to get her back on the road and i just want to know what should i do before it goes for MOT.

I have a few things lined up already, oil, gearbox oil and oil filter. What else should i be checking or replacing?

Not really mechanically minded but more than willing to take on the work myself.

Thanks in advance.

John

I would deffo give the tyres a close inspection after beeing parked for 3 years, is it auto or manual? changing all fluids then crank the engine over to let new oil cover all the internals(dont start it until primed with new oil). then stand back and see what happens.

I agree with Suprahuman. Also brakes and handbrake are most likely siezed. Jack up

each corner take each wheel off in turn and lightly tap the calipers and discs with a RUBBER mallet to knock off any loose surface rust and to free up internals. Chock the wheels and leave it in gear with the handbrake off to free up the shoes in the rear brakes.

When you have the tyres off you can check for flat spots as well. I would recommend a new battery as yours is most likely dead like the dodo.

Thanks for the response guys, getting a good idea what to do now. Its going to cost a bit but will be worth it.

As for it being stood 3 years, it was my dads car, his pride and joy and it is a good tidy car. He passed away last year after a long battle with the big C and it is only now that i have got the time and money to get it back to its former glory.

I will be a paid up member soon so expect more questions!

Thank you all.

Some of these points have already been said, but in the interests of completeness:

New tyres all round, those will be dangerously deformed.

The brakes will be seized up but you can unstick them using the starter motor as already discussed (providing it's a manual!)

All the fluids will need doing, coolant, brake, clutch, oil and filter. Gearbox and diff even though they are a pain. Hopefully it's had proper antifreeze in it so corrosion would be minimal. Brake fluid is a 3 year service item anyway.

New battery, that one will be dead. If it holds a charge at all it'll dissipate overnight.

Wiper blades are probably perished or rock hard but they can wait :)

Once you've replaced the fluids, pull the EFI fuse and crank it for 10 seconds or so to get the oil everywhere before putting any load on things. Then fire it up, and you'll probably need to bleed the cooling system after all that.

The aircon gas probably left a long time ago as well. The rest of it should work OK.

Would it not be worth taking the plugs out and dropping a bit of engine oil down each cylinder then crank it over without the plugs as theres zero load on the big ends or mains then till you get oil pressure up then pop the plugs in and fire it up
