Pig
Please can you help me. My router melted its self in my loft last night so i need to replace it. However, there are SO many to choose from. Why cant the have a website that says: For home use: Good for speed, choose this one Good for distance, choose this one Good for nothing, choose this one. Its doing my head in. Please can someone help me pick one, it needs to stretch about 20 meters which is a total stab as im no good with distance, on google earth it looks like 5 and a bit smart 4/4 lengths if that helps. It also has walls to go through (i keep it in my loft as thats where my main socket it) Budget - no more than £200, prefferably £100 or less. Thanks and sorry to bother you with my boring stuff but I dont drive the car anymore so have no need to ask what I have broken any more! leelbuk
Are your walls made from cardboard John? Going to have to be a good one to ensure you get a good signal through to the lowest floor. Are any of the computers you connect to it capable of Wireless N? (802.11n) With the greater speeds these offer you should be able to see good speeds further away from the router than previous wireless b/g routers. I have one of these and have no issues. Has a lot to configure if need be but simple to setup if you don't need all the extra features, plus being Wireless N and a gigabit LAN it's fairly futureproof too. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166272
Konrad
It would be worth telling if you have ADSL or DSL connection, d o you have a modem already? I have Virgin cable modem and using this one sucessfully for over a year. Good range, very stable and have MAC filtering so no need for encrypted crap slowing your connection
leelbuk
Oh yes forgot about that ^ however assumed when you said master socket it would be ADSL and not cable
Branners
Always been happy with Linksys stuff. I have found Netgear units fail more often due to overheating, but thats just personal opinion. I would get a .N router as eventually everything will be .N. But for the moment if you have any .G wireless devices like laptops then the wireless router will step down to .G speeds for all connections even if they can do .N. Aweegin
I can only speak from experience.. belkin never did it for me, had lots of probs..over heating mainly. Been using one of THESE for around 4 years with no bother what so ever. My laptop and PS3 both pick up an 80%+ strength signal through 2 1930's council house ground floor walls. Though it has gone up in price since i bought it but other versions are around i see Netgear ftw!! Thanks for your advise, decision now made Oh..missed that bit lol
SteamAhead
Just to open up an older thread.... I have a netgear router that came with the sky package 2 years ago. Really needing a router with stronger wireless (router is in one corner of house and xbox in the other, cant be moved really) so signal not to strong I'd also would like to connect a hardrive to router for mac upstairs and mrs laptop down stairs. Any recommendations for 2011 model router or could there be something from last year thats just as good? As per Pig, so much to choose from out there
