Misfire problem

I totally agree Konrad, but i'm now not sure if messing with the EMU connectors was perhaps just a red herring at the time. I've done exactly the same with the emu, removed the connectors, sprayed in WD40 and made sure they are firmly connected but it made no difference. When the car was at Charlie's you could shake the emu and lightly tap it and you could hear it was affecting the missfire. None of that is making any difference this time.

I've pm'd IanC for advice on which outputs on the emu control anything related to cylinder No. 1

Find attached the wiring guide I made for the E-Manage. It'll show you what should be connected to where and which ones monkey with cylinder 1.

The EMU itself will report faults if it's not getting an ignition or injector signal in, have you connected it to a laptop and checked for codes in the software yet?

Also move the wiring loom around a lot while the engine is running, see if you can reproduce it. I had a problem like this once and it led to me refurbing all of the ECU connectors:

Thanks very much Ian, i have not connected laptop to the emu yet. Will it be obvious where to check for fault codes in the software?

Did try moving and knocking all the wires in the passenger footwell last night while engine was running and it didnt affect the running of the car at all. However it did when this problem was around a few months back.

I'll check the fault codes tonight on the emu

All new coil pack clips Rob. Makes no odds if cylinder 1 is connected or not. I did remember now after looking at the emu last night the the active light was i think either red, or flashing red indicating a fault.

Just need to get home to check if there are any codes on there

Cheers

cheers mate :)

Reason i order new coil pack connectors was because a few of them looked very brittle. When checking them i snapped one of the wires going to the coil pack on cylinder number 1. So this cylinder (the problem one) now has 2 freshly soldered wires to so is making a very good connection.

That was my next idea :) Have tried all the traders on here and they have none. Dude thinks he has some but cannot find them.

Really dont want to buy a new one only to find out mine is ok. Anyone that is local to GU5 9TD (Guildford) would be hugely appreciated and would cover any petrol costs

I don't think it will be your igniter, these are seriously robust. You can send it to me and I'll test it for you. As both the e-manage and the OEM ecu are reporting an ignition fault, my money would be on a break in the wire from the ecu igniter channel 1 to the e-manage ignition channel1 IN. Do a continuity test between the ecu plug and the e-manage plug.

I had this same issue when I was diagnosing mine, its difficult to get parts.

Above is a good suggestion. Poss previously it was a dodgy connection and now its completly broke hence why moving the wires now makes no difference. Reading the above comments if its happening all the time its unlikely to be a coil pack, clip or ignitor more likely a broken wire.

worth ruling it out though :)

Cheers guys, i will check the wires tonight hopefully. I believe Ian did all the wiring for B'have and has done it very well its all properly insulated and sealed. Which in turn will make it a bit of a pig to check. But now i have the emu wiring diagrams it should be easier to track where to start. Sadly i dont have a multimeter, and even if i did i wouldnt be too sure how to check things with it :(

Just tried Chris Wilson incase he has an ignitor, just in case

Got a guy coming round with the osiloscope tonight and going to check some of the ecu connections now i have a wiring diagram. He said it definetly wouldnt be the ignitor pack as if it had gone it would be affecting more or all the cylinders. Not totally sure there?

Going to add a thread incase anyone is local to Guildford that could stop by and try the ignitor.

Right, problem sorted, i hope :)

To cut a long story short, all the wiring is fine. We found that the stock ecu was sending a signal to the emu, but it was not coming out the emu on the cylinder 1 ignition cable.

We bypassed the emu and the car started fine, all cylinders and no ecu light on. Didnt sound great, but it started. Poor toyota ecu probably wondered what the hell it was being asked to control :)

We then took the emu apart to see if there was a dry solder connection and found a small chip just sitting on the circuit board not attached!

There are 8 tiny legs on each side of the chip that need resoldering, which im sure can be done?

So question is, who can i trust to send this to to resolder without them stuffing it up and then having to buy a new emu? Is it best going back to Emanage themselves, do they even offer a repair service?

Good work, though I suspect that unless you have a chip on there for each cylinder, chances are that it won't make much difference.......good luck though!

You'd think an entire chip coming free would do more than cause a misfire in one cylinder; more like a fire!

You should be able to solder it back with a mini iron, say 16-20 watts, not too hot but just enough to avoid dry joints. Obviously if it's under warranty then send it back.

By the way, might want to select 'Macro Mode' for close shots if you have it :D

Normally a small flower symbol ;)

Oh yeah, I seem to recall the garage owner I mentioned saying that with his dodgy GZ igniter, (as he had been assured atleast), the engine fired up but ran rough so it's still potentially the cause. I never found out for sure as I gave up on it when he didn't seem to know what he was going to do about getting another.

To see where that 'Q' came from in the heading I never gave it! (see edit history)

Cheers guys. Pics were on phone so not the best :)

Couldnt believe it turned out to be this. Its certainly not under warranty. Do you think i'm best sending it to the manufacturer, at least that way if something happens to the chip they will have replacements.

It was great to hear the car running as well, i was surprised it even started from the stock ecu :)

I think it rather depends on the risk/reward ratio really.

Best contact them first?

Been trying to search who to send this to. From looking on the Greddy site, are they really only in Japan? To send it to them would take ages to get it back and silly freight charges for what effectively needs doing.

Soemone i know has just said they could solder that back easily without a problem, but if it doesnt go well its new ecu time. Not that i dont trust him but if it didnt go well i obviously wouldnt expect him to buy me a new ecu.

What to do...

In all honesty due to the cost and time involved in sending it back and getting it repaired it would prob be cheaper and quicker to get a new one anyway.

Therefore you may as well let your mate have a go. If I had access to a large mag i would do the job for you. Cant hurt really :)
