stevie_b
At least you'll never catch Pete Docherty doing that. It took me a while to get it, but I got there in the end. ... "Can I get a loan of...." = May I borrow... "Have you got a loan of..." = Have you borrowed.... ... Here's a similar annoyance: "Could of" instead of "could have". e.g. Incorrect: "I could of become a good speller" Correct: "I could have become a good speller". I think this is due to people typing phonetically. It's very sloppy. By the way, I'm finding this thread very cathartic.
tbourner
This one seems to cover 90% of the population and annoys the crap out of me... "Can I get a loan of...." = May I borrow... "Have you got a loan of..." = Have you borrowed.... I've heard people ask "Can you borrow me ....." as well. I was called 'posh' for using the word "preposterous" in a sentence before. How about: Greedy : Having a strong desire for food or drink. Marked by greed: having or showing a selfish desire for wealth and possessions. GReddy : California based company known for the development and distribution of Trust Company automotive performance products.
caseys
This one seems to cover 90% of the population and annoys the crap out of me... "Can I get a loan of...." = May I borrow... "Have you got a loan of..." = Have you borrowed.... "Have you got a loan of 10p" is not a way of asking to borrow 10p, it is a way of asking the person if they have borrowed 10p from someone else. "Can I get a loan of 10p" is the correct way of asking to borrow 10p. I fail to see why so many people look at me funny when I say "No, I have my own money. Why do you ask?". Very glad someone brought up "Bought" and "Brought", that really does my head in. Back in the day we didn't have these sorts of problems. The other one I also think is quite prevalent here is "advice" and "advise" being mixed up. I think the loan one though may be local chap as I certainly haven't heard it being abused around here. Ian C
Maybe it's just that people have always been idiots in general, but as kids we only read stuff that was written by non-idiots - fiction literature, factual textbooks, that sort of thing. Then as we reach adulthood and are eased out of the "learning things" stage into the "doing things and making an average family life" stage, we are slowly more exposed to general stupidity and less to academia. Hence the perception is, the world gets dumber as you get older. Not that I've read a textbook for a while. Maybe they are all now in NewSpeak thanks to Labour, which would be doubleplusungood. Thorin
I'm pretty sure I started a thread about this 'back in the day' so I'm claiming repost. Maybe you did, maybe you didn't, maybe I or several other people started several similar threads. Ultimately though, I couldn't be arsed searching. After reading a few posts recently where people seemingly couldn't understand the difference, I thought I'd post up a reminder. Their, I've sayed it. Know knead too thank me, butt your welcome. RedM
People that say aks (sounds like axe) instead of ask. 'Tards. I blame Pink Floyd. "We don't need no education" they sang. I beg to differ.
