hay people im pretty clued up when it comes to pc's as i build them in my spare time. i have a question for those windows experts out there as i havnt really done somthing like this b4

i have a genuine copy of windows 7 professional. buts its a copy that can only be installed and not updated over vista... so id have back hundreds of gigs of music etc... off my terabite hd

but i also run a 250gb second hd for emergancys and extra bits (theres next to nothing on it) so i was thinking of installinf the windows 7 os on the 250gb hd.. but could i add short cuts from the orignal terabite hd and run programmes directly off it or would i need to reinstall the programes onto the windows 7 250gb hard drive?

thanks

paul

ie, if you have a 500GB drive, it is one partition or do your have 60GB for windows and the rest for your data.

I think it's better to take the pain now to set it all up now, rather then trying to muddle through with two installations.

I'd also advise partitioning the drive as above, then if you somehow mess up the OS drive, it's just a simple reinstall rather then risking loosing the data too.

If the 1TB harddrive is a Samsung Spinpoint I would keep that as your OS drive as they are lightening quick. Even partitioned they are ridiculously fast.

If I was in your shoes I would copy all the music, videos, documents etc onto the 250gb HDD and then completely format and re-partition the 1tb drive. I would probably go around 200 and 750 partitions. Install Win 7 onto the 200gb partition and then either move the music back into the 750gb partition or just leave it where it is and treat it as 3 drives.

Once you have all your programs etc installed and everything running the way you like it create a backup of your entire Win7 drive and put it onto the 250gb drive (if the 1tb drive fails you can always get your 1st partition back. You can do the same with the music etc if it is really important and you have space.

That's what I would do too, installing the OS onto one of the partitions of the 1TB disk, assuming you want to keep the 250gb disk as "spare" storage.

Edit: just read Rob's comment. Good point.

I thought you said you were "pretty clued up when it comes to pc's" ?

As Creative said - use something like Partition Magic to split the drive and your data will be fine.

Iv never Partitioned before.... Didn't say i know everything.... And besides, everyday is a school day ;)

Ok thanks for the reply

just a lil update

i partitioned 200gb of the 1t hdd and installed windows 7 on it like scott advised and all my data is still on ther 750gb. backed up the important stuff on the 250gb hdd anyway.

just finishing it all off now.

thanks all for the advice

EDIT: Now merged the 200GB with the 750GB to make back into 1T HDD again, all data still there an all ok :) now running windows 7 and its a nice OS so far...
