weskereric
At the begining, coolant was just boiling in the expansion bottle when we stop the engine and the temperature gauge didn't move. But now, the coolant is also boiling driving and the car is being overwarmed. All water has evaporated. We already change the rad cap without sucess. There is no exhaust smoke, coolant and oil are clear, and there is no coolant leak What could it be ?
Scott
Most likely an air lock. Slightly more serious things to think about are screwed water pump and blocked radiator/pipes.
Rinus
I had the same problem, My radiator has been locked... Also tried rad.cap and waterpump before, still same problem... New radiator and now more problems
Alex
At the very least your rad cap is knackered. Change it for a PROPER Toyota one (they are cheap). Retest. Still got an issue, change the rad....
Rinus
When I bought my car, I noticed the valve in the rad.cap wasn't there (broken or removed)... When I put on a new one, the rad burst at the back of the inlet of the radiator... when the engine was off
supra-ireland
Check that the pipe to the expansion tank isn't being restricted.
Nic
Is the coolant circulating? Starting from cold with rad cap off check the fluid is circulating when you rev the engine. Check hoses are tight and there are no leaks and as already said make sure there are no air locks in the system. Check the new rad cap you have fitted is sealing properly, make sure the top of the rad where the cap seals against is clean and free of any crud/rust. Check thermostat isn't stuck. If you do all that and it's still overheating then try replacing the rad.
Konrad
Also worth to add that if you want to get rid of airlocks, most common way is to put your car with front being higher than rear and leave it for a night. you can open cap too.
Harry Sachs
I'm gonna go with seized thermostat on this one. I had the exact same symptoms.
Scott
The only thing putting me off the thermostat is the fact that the coolant is boiling into the overflow. Would that not suggest that the water was in fact flowing through the rad rather than just sitting in the block? Soaring temps with a fairly cool rad would suggest thermostat to me right away.
