ATF and diesel oil as a flush

Someone recommended this method on here a while back and it stuck in my head. I've done some looking around with very mixed results.

The reason for the ATF is the detergents, that I can follow but then reading into it a bit more I don't know.

ATF USED to have more detergents in it than oil, so before an oil change, alot of people used to put a little in their oil right before a change to clean things out a little. Nowadays, with modern synthetic oil, thats no longer the case. Modern Synthetics have more detergents now, and do a much better job of cleaning things up on their own. ATF wont really do much.

I personally add some Marvels Mystery oil to my own oil a day or 2 before a change to clean things up a bit. Its basically a mix of light cleaner oils thats found pretty much at every auto store, and is pretty cheap.

So I'm unsure now, there is also the comment that diesel oils are a good one to run for a bit..

And even putting a bit of diesel in your petrol to clean the valves.

And on the topic of diesel... i've heard (and know from experience) that it's a great way of cleaning you valves and injectors...lol

it sounds wierd, but if you add a quart of diesl fuel to an almost full tank of gas, and run it down, your injectors and valves will have the 'grunge' build up removed.... keep in mind though... you will have less performance in you car (so don't go racing), and your car WILL smoke more than usual.

Which did make me chuckle about the 'WILL' smoke :)

So does ATF still have detergent in it, and is this a good idea...

Personally Id never flush an engine with turbo/s on it, but I know alot of people swear by it. IMO all you do is dislodge years of carbon/crap and run it round your oil system through the fragile turbo bearings etc.

Theres a clown on a soarer forum that swears by it but he uses parafin or some other such light oil. Not for me ta.

Does ATF have detergent in it, why would it? Its not designed to clean anything its designed to operate under pressure and high sheer forces

use a good quality diesel engine oil as it contains detergents. run for a short time drain and refil with good quality sinthetic.

A good friend of mine reconditions engines and turbo`s, he advised never to use engine flush of any kind.

Well, that is the other thought...

I've used a flush a few years back on a 25yr a-series morris engine, and it rattled and knocked like a bastid afterwards... admittedly that would probably be worst case example, since the engine hadn't exactly been loved or serviced in 15 yrs.

weather its detergents or dispersents in the ATF - it does work ! I have done many cars , the porsche tappets always start rattling and having tried oil changes and flushing agents ,the best results were with ATF AND DERV added.

Also many turbo cars flushed with no ill effects , the crap that comes out even after an oil change is impressive

new oil doesnt discolour as fast so it must be flushing better than the new oil be it synthetic or not

The engine is run off load and idle only and after flushing and new oil and filter you can feel a difference

Lots of people over the years have flushed engines this way and I cant remember any one ever having a turbo fail or engine fail after flushing

However if an engine is knackered like justgavs - its not going to make a crap engine all fine again only a rebuild can do that

  • 2 weeks later...

i run redex and stp fuel injector cleaner every 5k and it really works a liter of e85 is very good at cleaning lamda sensor.i always run wynns flush for 20 mins in the oil before i change brillant stuff. i always let the oil drain for the whole day.this method is so good i cant even see the oil on dipstick to get a reading, the oil stays yellow for quite a long time. to many machanics bung up the drain plug way to soon.

Ah, OK. I don't need to know myself, but I was getting the impression that people were talking at cross-purposes, with various combinations of ATF, diesel engine oil and diesel itself proposing to be added to either the fuel or the engine oil. :)

To clear up my contribution, I've run an old basic petrol-engined car for a short time with diesel engine oil instead of normal engine oil to help clean the internals of emulsified oil after head gasket failure.

When you say short time, are we talking minutes, hours or a few days??
