Anyone running A Apexi AVC-R Boost Controller??

Just had the AVC-R Controller fitted today, got the car back and oh my god is this thing complicated?

Its been fitted as to the apexi generic toyota instructions and the purple harness wire is connected to the injector signal wire not the revs.

before the car went in, it was running perfectly & boosting to about 0.8 bar (stock boost) with a 50.5mm rr fitted and no fcd (i recently found out).

however now the car only boosts to about 0.6 bar and it seems nothing i do with the controller makes much difference to the way it boosts, its terrible?

It says in the instructions if u set the controller to '0ff' mode rarther than 'a' or 'b' mode it should run normal boost, which in my case is 0.8bar, however in 'off' mode it almost loses all boost/power 0.3bar or less?

Anyone running this set up and am i missing something here??

Help please!!!!

Its back in the garage tuesday for them to take a look at, but is this controller just really hard to set up?

Have you connected and capped all hoses the right way?

 

It's been done to the drawing by my local specialists, unless u need to do something diff to what the diagram says it's correct,

I did manage to speak to the chap who installed it and he said either the hoses are wrong, as in placement or it's because he's connected the purple harness wire to the inj signal not the revs, which apexi also recommends not too do?

It states when ever possible always connect to inj signal for better performance, is this the problem maybe???

If anyones got one fitted and running this setup I would love to know how u got on with it and if it was all plain sailing?

Right been out driving for about 2 hours this morning......lol

Im starting to get somewhere now with it, and im pretty sure its just that its that damn complicated to set up thats the problem.

I have it running really well and running upto about 0.9bar on full boost, but just cant quite get anymore boost on full, im aiming for 1.2bar.

It seems theres so many settings on this controller and its not very user friendly so if anyone could help me out please let me know, it would be great to see what settings u have your controller set too and what kind of performance your getting, maybe i have problems now with airflow, intake air temp, airfilter etc...maybe these factors are restricting me from any higher boost levels?

The easiest way to cock up one of these is to get the solenoid connections wrong. There are three holes in it and you'll use two of them to control an internal wastegate and a different two to control an external one. If you've got these wrong it'll be very unpredictable and behave strangely, which sounds like what you've got here.

 

Having a look at the instructions, the three ports are NC, NO, and COM.

 

NC and COM are used for an external wastegate, NO and COM for the internal, so you should have:

  • NO connected to the pressure reference from the turbo housing
  • COM connected to the wastegate actuator
  • NC unconnected and open to atmosphere

 

(these NO COM etc markings are on the solenoid, by the way)

Hah I have my old settings from the sequential twins:

 

Setting A

---------

Boost duty = 1.30kg/cm2

 

Duty map = 45% general, 30% @ 5000, 51% @ 5500

 

Ne points = 2000, 2500, 3000, 3500, 4500, 5000, 5500, 6000

 

FB Speed = 2, 1, 1, 1, 1

 

Learn Gear = O, O, O, O, O

 

Start Duty = +2, +2, +1, +1, 0

 

ETC settings

------------

Car select = 6Cyl, 4Spd, NorthEast arrow Thr

 

Sensor Select = 1, Relative 1

 

Gear Judge:

1 = 173

2 = 104

3 = 074

4 = 057

5 = 044

I found this diagram much better then the APEXi one:

Hope it helps further if the connections are wrong.

I'll check my settings later for 1.2bar and write them here for you :)

"Off" mode should revert to wastegate only boost, yes. If the ports are plumbed in incorrectly then it might be venting your boost through the solenoid, hence the lack of pressure.

Obviously, be careful :) I can't be held responsible if you blow your engine up with these settings :whistle:

 

The Ne point settings aren't that great I realise now, as I've attempted to control the boost below 4000rpm and that's daft because the wastegate isn't used for that. In my defence the date stamp on this file is 5/4/2003 so this was over seven years ago ;)

 

However it does only go up in 500rpm increments, so put in:

3000, 3500, 4000, 4500, 5000, 5500, 6000, 6500

 

Set your target boost pressure, say 1.2bar, and put in a duty of about 40%. Go for a 2nd/3rd gear run and see what pressure you hit. If it's lower than your target boost, increase the duty cycle value. If you suddenly see *** instead of a percentage value, it's trying to self-learn and tweak the duty cycle across the rev range, which is good, it means your base duty cycle is about right. Pressing "next" will show you a bar chart of the duty cycle per Ne-point. You can tweak these individually as well.

 

I've checked your garage and you've got an auto, so the gear judge values are completely wrong as they are for a manual. It only affects the Start Duty settings anyway, and they are just a bit of a tweak to try and get boost faster in lower gears or stop it spiking in higher ones. So, for now, turn off Learn Gear by putting an X in all the holes for FB Speed and Learn-Gear, and zeroing the Start Duty values.

thx guys for the great feedback im back at home today with the car so i will take a look again.

Ian i will take your advise about turning off the learn gear settings and zeroing the sd values and see how i get on,

Is your car fully decated?

 

yes mate has been for about 3 years, ive basically been running stock boost when i thought it was running at 1-1.2bar because of a faulty gauge. :(

My cars been up for sale for about 2 months with no one even coming to see it, finally the first person came to veiw it last week and he actually noticed the boost gauge only hitting 0.6/0.8 bar!

I said to him that maybe my new gauge was faulty and honestly had never noticed it before, plus the car drove so well anyway i never thought to question it?

I was doing all this work just to try and sell the car, but i think im going to have to just keep it abit longer now to enjoy the new toys, its also booked in for a dyno on thursday afternoon so i can see what its running at and get a print out.

Got the car back last night guys, thx so much for the info and drawings, it was piped up wrong but now it's sorted and hits just over 1 bar with the current settings, but boy has it got some guts back, it pulls like a train!!

It's hopefully going to be set up properly over at corten millers the sarvo if they can fit it in on the rolling rd!

Im defo not selling now, it was hard enough having to come to terms with the idea a few months back, 7 years ownership is a long time and the fact i cant get any where near the amount i want for it, i dont think im going to ever sell it now.

very pleased for you. Good that you started this thread as I'll be fitting mine in next month :)

 

Its defo an awesome bit of kit when connected up prop, its really good to have all the info it reads/display's so u really know whats going on with your boost settings/car.

I am having my controller set up at corten millers on the 16th july its costing me £100 an hour (hopefully it will only take that....lol)

But afterwards i will know that the cars going to be running to its best abilities and have the print outs to show the diff modes etc and what power outputs im running in those modes :)

Im pretty excited to see whats she going to be running at im hoping for 400+bhp at the wheels, i know it was over 400bhp at the flywheel a few years back so will be very interesting to see what its at now running 1.2bar boost :cool:
