Front upper wishbone bush help

Just replacing my bushes with polybushes and the upper wishbone arm the one with the long bolt , the bolt has some play within the bush centre metal carrier , the bottom arms are so tight I had to tap the bolt through. Is this right ? I checked the factory bushes I took out and the same thing the bolt has some movement within the carrier's it must be causing a knocking noise ?.

not much but compared to the lower arm allot as that was tight , if I put the wishbone into place with the bolt in and just put the nut on the end to hold it and wobble the whole arm you can hear and feel it move its almost like the bolt needs to be bigger just wondering if its normal as the standard bushes are the same.

Mine had a small amount of play when i changed to new arms, i copper slipped all mine and didn't haver any knocking noises, i didn't have any before i changed them though.

 

The lower arms get hit by all the rd crap so had the eccentric adjusters corroded a liitle hence making them tight ? i had to cut some of mine off as they wouldn't come out no matter what we tried.

 

The secret is to use plenty of grease in my opinion

Thought I would look into this further , currently in talks with powerflex at the moment ,

 

Bolt is 13.99/13.90 so not bad for a 14mm bolt I will probably replace it just in case of any wear in certain areas of the bolt.

 

The two upper wishbone sleeves appear to be slightly different each end , one end 14.12 and the other 14.37

 

I checked the bottom arms that seemed okay and as you can see they are 16.03 and 16.02

 

Is this within tolerance the upper wishbone? ,.

from just completing mine i think you are getting hung up on the wrong measurements, the critical measurements for the top bush steel insert would be its length not the id, the bolt is fine and cannot wear (unless it came loose) as it does not rotate, the whole arm pivots on the steel bush inserts, once you put the arm on and tighten the bolt the bolt then locks the two steel inserts in position and the poly bushs rotate round these fixed points, any slight play in the position you bolt the top arm up is adjusted for by the lower adjusters once you get it set up

I see what your saying but with the front only having one long bolt going through both bushes unlike the rears which have 2 bolts there is a possibility for the top arm to be knocked out of line due to there being too much clearance between the bolt OD and bush ID,

Im being a little pedantic but its not difficult to make a simple straight bush correctly and would rather have it right if it were mine

I had a reply from Powerflex

 

Hi Charles

 

 

The bore of the sleeves are drilled out so there will be some small variation and generally we do leave a clearance between the bolt and bore.

 

 

 

Once the bolt is tight it holds the sleeve in position so you would not get any movement between the bolt and sleeve.

 

 

 

Most car manufactures have similar if not bigger clearances on the bushes, I have just checked one of the Supra original rear bushes, have not got an original front bush to hand, which measures 14.32 and uses a 14mm bolt.

Its the usual mass production standards.

 

Poor.

 

Chaz, don't finish tightening any of the main pivot bolts until the suspension has the weight of the car resting on it. That way the sleeves should be in their proper position before they are clamped to the chassis.

 

You may find it easier to finish the job by loading the suspension with a jack at the hub rather than refitting the wheels and dropping the car onto them.

That wont make any differance with these sleeves ? the plastic part is seperate to the metal sleeve unlike the o/e sleeves which are bonded to the rubber part hence the need to drop the car before doing the bolts up.

It will allow any slack that exists between the sleeves and the bolt and the bolt and the chassis to be removed which would help the top control arm to resist any re-settling at a later date. No?
