RobAndrews
Keeping it short, I'm desperate to learn about how to do body work (fitting kits) on cars, spraying etc. Does anyone know how I can go about learning the skills and techniques, obviously I can buy a banger and learn from books but I'm not much of a book reader but currently I think it's my best option. The problem I've got is I'm fairly well paid in Accounts and have a mortgage to pay so can't give it all up to go into a garage as a trainee or anything. Anyone got any bright ideas ? Also my mate wants to get into ECU mapping and everything attached with it but where can you learn that ? Once we are clued up we want to set up a partnership but I can see a few years hard work in between !
adi2009
Things like bodywork and ECU mapping do need practical experience. So at some point (whether it is after reading theory in books) you would atleast need to do some part time training i suppose.
RobAndrews
I was thinking about approaching local body shops to see if I could work on a Sat for nothing and just be taught but I don't think garages would be too receptive and then you've probably got Health & Safety issues too. It'd probably only work if it was someone I knew. Is there a recognised Pro Qual for bodyshop workers ?
terribleturner
Try a local place Rob. My local garage said years ago that if i wanted they would help and guide me through spraying the rear wing of my Astra. Really wished i had taken them up on it now

Matt T
You can do courses on car restoration, maybe a good idea looking into those

Is there a recognised Pro Qual for bodyshop workers ? thats ya best idea, but with prep work its all about experiance i can tell you the complete way step by step to repair a dent or a scratch and/or even fit a body kit i've been doing rolls royce and bentley restoration for 10 years now and was in crash repair before that. you just need to get stuck in with a helpful eye over your shoulder. i think thats the only way you learn...by your mistakes
RobAndrews
well for the moment i've decided the best course of action available is this. I've bought a manual on body repair work etc and my Dad has also previously worked into garages so we are going to buy an old car for next to nothing and have a go at it. If we make mistakes then we haven't lost anything, except maybe a limb or two !
