Virgin 50mb Fibre Optic Broadband Experience?

Matt H

Recommended Posts

To be honest, I had just got a brand new built house at that time and I think there were reported problems with Virgin around the area. Could be that then. So I guess I never got to experience the real fibre optics. :(

We hardly have broadband on the island let alone fibre optic aswell. :(

What you are talking about is virginmedia.net. It is an ADSL connection exactly the same as BT, Sky, O2 etc etc etc.

If you had a cable modem and not an ADSL modem it would have been a totally different kettle of fish.

Every company throttles, other than a few, as far as I know... and they are not the brand names. Sky, BT, O2 as far as I know all do it or have a fair use policy. The 50MB package from Viginmedia has NO limit and NO throttling, making it the dogs biscuits.

I've been with Telewest/Virginmedia since 1999 and I would never get anything else. When the Wife and I were looking at houses one of my pre-requesits was cable access.

Oh, as has been said I doubt you would need more than 20mb. The only reason to maybe think about it is the lack of throttling.

i have 20mb from virgin and its more than enough usually get 13-18mb depending on time, only had 1/2 day downtime in 4 years so id definatly recomend it

What are you downloading from to get those speeds? If you used something reliable like Newsgroups you would get 20mb all the time... other than throttling if you downloaded lots :D

I'm on 10mb Virgin cable at the moment and its fine for most stuff. I download most stuff overnight any way. I think there comes a point when there is enough bandwidth to download what you want.

Its the only virgin service I have though at the moment so dont think I could get the £3 deal.

My only concern with these super fast services are the crappy upload speeds. Whats so great having 50mb down if you only have 1mb upload :) surely most of them would be acknowledgement packets at that speed !

No line rental, it uses the underground fibre optic cable for your phone too.

I can't seem to get what you pay £55 for. The price is always subject to this asterix:

'when you take out a virgin phone line rental for £12 a month'

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/bundles/triple-builder.html

It's £51 but you must take out a phone line rental

The phone line is just that, £12. But it's not on the normal line, so you only pay for that. With Sky phone you have to pay the BT line rental on top, with Virgin you dont.

Also, all of the Virgin broadband packages apart from the 50mb are capped after a certain amount has been downloaded. The 50 just keeps on giving. There are only a couple of sites i know of where you'll see the full potential of the 50mb. Nvidia is one of them.

I have 50meg package and I always get 47+ on speedtests. Couldn't be happier with Virgin speed to be honest in terms of speed and reliability.

Every ADSL line I've ever tested has never been anywhere near the quoted speed, where as every cable (fibreoptic) connection I've tested has been very close to the advertised speed.

Pay your money, take your choices at the end of the day, if you want a cheap package, go with an ADSL connection. If you want super-fast broadband then go with cable.... I'd say 20meg package would be enough for most people...

Regarding my earlier post, I should mention I have the basic phone and 10mb broadband package (just short of £40/month) from virgin (originally Blueyonder before Virgin acquired them)...thats how I qualified for the "50mb for an extra £3/month" offer.

I have the 20mb its varies between 12 and 16 mb depending on time of day. Im paying way too much it seems if you can get 50mb for £40.

If you are in to your online games then you always want more from your connection. If its for general browsing then i wouldn't bother.

I used to get my connection throttled back due to cod using peer to peer. When that happens its dog slow!

Oh, not sure if it is still available but the package I am on is the £23 per month. Basic TV, 10mb Internet and Phone(free evening and weekends). I phoned up and asked for it when they were doing 2 for £20. It has gone up a little since hence the extra £3. TV is free with the phone line :)
