Virgin 50mb Fibre Optic Broadband Experience?

Matt H

Recommended Posts

I'm in a fibre optic area and I'm thinking getting the Virgin 50mb package.

Before I dive in, does anyone have any experiance of this service? It seems like a decent deal, but does it do what it says on the tin? Would you say it was value for money?

Cheers,

Matt

At almost £40 a month I cant imagine its good value for money. I get almost 20mb from my sky broadband.

Thats seems alot dude, in fact what do you get with the Package?? im with sky and get the Full HD package, with phone, broadband 10mb, for £63

Does it not say that you can get UPTO 50mb??? So ideally you could get 5mb, 10mb, etc??

But I don't want the phone or sky package. It's hard to get a good deal if you don't take out a phone line with it. What's your download limit?

20mb is probably enough. I would never pay £40 for 50mb when you know it's not guaranteed.

I wouldn't jump in without knowing what the maximum I could get, obviously pointless if you can't get close to the 50. That's why I'm asking what speeds people are seeing.

You simply get the broadband for £38. I don't want sky tv or a phone line, which present difficulties. Obviously I wouldn't go ahead if I was qouted a maximum of 5mb! lol.

What's your download limit btw?

I'd imagine the package you're on is something I'd be looking at if I wanted the tv and phone.

The 50mb thing really attracts me though. A entire mp3 in 1 sec is qouted. HD video is 15mins.

It's either that or settle with 10mb unlimited broadband for £20 a month and I don't need a land line, so no £12 line rental.

Virgin seems to be the only real option for no phone line. BT do the infinity but their pacakges are rubbish.

It is guarenteed. That's the difference between ADSL and cable ;)

I've been with virgin before and got the 20mb fibre optic access, and I never got 20mb. More like 5mb max.

Then you had a problem that Virgin should have fixed for you.

I'm on the 20Mb service, but could only see me wanting more if I started downloading masses more than I do today. Even on 20Mb it only takes an hour or so to download a DVD or computer game, so hardly worth going to 50Mb just to save a few minutes!

To be honest, I had just got a brand new built house at that time and I think there were reported problems with Virgin around the area. Could be that then. So I guess I never got to experience the real fibre optics. :(

We hardly have broadband on the island let alone fibre optic aswell. :(

Thanks for that post Homer. I didn't know it was gauranteed, that makes the decision a lot easier.

I'm used to getting 1.2mb broadband, so anything is an improvement.

Do they even have cable in the Isle of Wight? I mean Virgin might be there but just not with the cable.. they do provide ADSL services too.

I'm on 20mbit cable and can't fault it. There isn't a quicker public service to their fibre cable modems in the UK imho.

The island might have virgin (or not as you never ever here of them here), but there are no fibre optic cables planted anywhere here.

They do say we are 10 or 15 years behind everyone though. I don't think there are any plans of planting these cables here as of yet either. :(

What's the best you've got?

it varies but sooo expensive and crap for what you pay especially on limits.

saw a decent deal the other week, or so I thought.

160gb download limit. 80 off peak, 80 on peak for $50.... not bad until you read the small print and the line is limited to 64kbs! WTF is that all about!

we pay $45 for 35gb a month, 10gb on peak and 25gb off peak with a speed of:

the biggest issue over here is the download limits. they really cripple BB usage.

Matt, Im currently on the 10mb virgin broadband and got offered an upgrade to 50mb for an extra £3 month. It sounded too good to be true so i went to the virgin forums to see what people on 50mb had to say, it didnt make for good reading, but I suppose only those people with issues are going to bother posting on the forums. Most common issues seemed to be stability of connection/data transfer rate and unreliability of the modem/router you get on the 50mb package.

In the end I stuck with my 10mb service which is very stable.

Thanks bud  I might have to go and look on the virgin forums :sly: :D

Sounds like a good offer though, only £3 extra a month. Big difference in cost for me though. Perhaps if I start on the 10mb I might get the same offer after time!

:tempted:

It's expensive if you only have that service from virgin. If like me you go for the whole package, it works out very cheap. I have the TV package, the phone, and 50mb broadband. The TV package is the XL one with HD channels but no movies and sports. Total monthly bill for everything is around £55.

The broadband is very reliable and ridiculously fast. My fastest download speed I've seen from it is just over 6mb per second :D

You need line rental on top don't you bud? Wouldn't that make it more like £67?

That's something I've weighed up as well; whether I might as well get the media packages even though I'm not that interested, but the cost differences jsut don't seem attractive enough
