What are the metal bits on top of the rear suspension topmounts?

Just fitted my KYB AGX suspension at the weekend. As they are adjustable shocks I will be leaving off the thin metal covers that go over the topmounts. Does anyone know the purpose of these, are they to reduce noise or something ?

Cheers dudes. :)

As Chris said they just provide an extra barrier from the exterior to interior. Drill a hole (~1/2") in the top of the covers and you can access the adjusters. I drilled the holes and put a plastic panel plug in mine so I can access if needed and still keep the seal.

Cheers for the reply guys.

Normore, what springs do you use with your shocks and how do you find them. Is the differnece between settings quite obvious, haven't had a chance to experiment yet.
