I tell you what I do like and am thinking of getting one...! It's a mo-ped/scooter...! ha ah I had one when I lived in Bali, Indonesia it seriously replaced my legs..! I would use it even to cross the road..! ha ha So practical especially as over there you don't need to wear a helmet infact my riding gear was only a pair of shorts and my surfboard on a surfboard rack hooked up to the scooter..! I had such a blast riding it..! Bring on the scooter..! lol

morning all,

on the weekend i found myself playing around on a 1995 kawasaki ninja 600 and as i have never been taught how to ride a bike and never been a bike person it felt awsome .

i was quiet supprised at how fast i learnt the bike and i actually felt quiet at home on it.

so im asking to all you guys with bikes what steps you need to get a bike licence? how much roughly it costs to get a licence and can anybody reccomend a good " starter bike " id love to buy something like the ninja but i think something smaller like a 250cc would be a more sensible starting point untill i get a bit more experience on 2 wheels,

My advice would be:

Take the full test (after getting your CBT) so you can jump onto an unrestricted bike once you pass.

VERY IMPORTANT IMO - take lessons with a one to one private instructor, WHY? Because the larger schools take you out in pairs or threes so you get diluted training eg you pay for an hour but only get about 20 mins of one to one training. Plus while they are concentrating on someone else your behind them picking up bad habits!!!

Once you pass the fun begins, but again IMO dont go straight for the biggest bike you can, learning to ride properly on a smaller bike is just as fun and ultimately easier to handle when your beginning.

I started life on 400's and would totally recommend the same path. I have over the years had a CBR 400RR Tri-Arm, a CBR 400RR Gull-Arm and an NC30...all of which are great but my favorite was the Gull-Arm.

After that moved to 600's and now have a 900RR Fireblade.

Enjoy..

I got no faults :smug:

What were your faults dude and when is your mod 2?

Oh and what were your trap speeds?

Minor for pulling the clutch in too early on the swerve and going too tight on the figure of 8 apparently. Swerve was 51k and the emergrncy stop trap speed was 56k. Mod 2 is 17th of Aug but ill keep phoning the dsa might get lucky with a cancelation.

Haha too tight? Unless you were excessivly wobbling you should have been ok :)

I had 57 on my swere and 64 on my emergency stop LOL she pulled a funny face when she read the handheld gismo thing.

Mine is on the 22nd, good luck dude and post up when you have passed :)

Good luck all, I took my DAS last year just before the tests changed (got harder) ? and am absolutely loving my biking.

It's a bit like driving a supra on a road as wide a motorway, every bend / corner you can line up and ride through, it's brilliant.

Joined a local biker club which holds ride-outs most weekends somewhere, been to France & wales in the last month. Surprised how many women bikers you get as well, makes a change to this male only (almost) forum.

Got a (sensible) Suzuki SV650S which is about as quick as my BPU Supe up to 120/30 - then that's it.

Just starting to look at something bigger / quicker but realy like the sound & grunt of a V Twin.

Have fun, be careful. One of our newer girls members came off yesterday and was very lucky she didn't hit the tree her (wrecked) bike did !

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been looking at the bikes and insurance over the past day or two.

I have found that I can get a Fireblade 900 1996-1999 models for £1700 to £2500.

And my insurance is bang on £500 quid.

Im debating if to get a 600 first, or go straight to the 900 but refrain from using full throttle until im more experienced... it is "the cheaper" choice in the longrun.

I went straight for the gixer 750 best of both worlds mate after a few months of ownership on the 600 you might be craving more power. My thoughts are the same as yours i got mine to save the hassle of buying a bigger bike later on. I do think a 900 will be a wee bit big for a first bike mate you know yourself if the power is there you will be tempted to use it :D

I was quoted 700 for my k4 750 as a new rider which is quite good.

why not a VFR750. Probably the best allrounder ever made. Brilliant build quailty, very comfortable, could ride it all day and not a problem, good handiling cheaper to insure than a sports bike and would give most 600's a run for there money. Mine and my fathers older model maxed out at 160.

Put a race pipe on it and there is not a bike that sounds like them
