Ewen
Over the last week or so, I've seen what look and act like columns of black smoke rising up off the top of several large trees. I've never seen this before, and its only a group of say, five or six trees in a specific place....namely near the roundabout at the top of the A348 in Poole (opposite the Meridien Majestic garage). Each tree has several such columns / plumes rising above them. Trivial, as I made sure to note in the thread title, but fascinating to me anyway. Tiny insects ? marc_p
It's the f**king elves, had the same problem at mine last year, try banging saucepans together and generally making loud noises whilst walking round the trees and you should be able to scare the little b4stards away. caseys
Will see on Saturday I'd think swarming columns of insects what with the recent humid rainy weather then extreme sun that we've been getting quite amusing you found a supra via google street view looking at this. Does look like my old silver one but no idea of dates of the photos not me if it's 2007 onwards though which is more than likely!
caseys
Well I drove around the roundabout 4 times yesterday, probably looking like a complete fool in the process but saw absolutely nothing in the trees. I probably should've had my windows down and screamed out the windows "look at the trees!" to put the finishing touches on it. I'd still go with my theory of swarming/breeding insects, wasps etc.
BazzaAlpine
Yes they are insects but no idea what ones. I have a tree right across a junction where I see exactly the same thing only close enough to tell that they are insects. was the same place last year too. Might see if I can get a close up pic next time I notice it.

I've found a few similar references on line, and in these cases they were columns of midges.
