justice
iv got my UK spec callipers here in front of me and was just wondering if I get them powder coated tomorrow will it ruin any of the seals, or will the front 2 callipers need stripping right down? I've stripped most of them down but not sure how far I'll have to go?!
Hoppy
The powder coating process we do in work, means they would have to go into a 270 degree oven for the powder paint to cure.So any rubber seals would have to be removed or they would simply melt. Not sure if there are any other methods of powder coating though?

supra steveo
Just paint them with some heat proof paint mate , mine is on the square go have a look at it and see what you think I've got some paint left over too
Hoppy
Surely spirited driving generates more heat than that? You would think so mate yes, but how much heat actually reaches the seals on a working caliper? In our oven, the seals would be subject to the full 270 deg
justice
the front callipers, they split in half. Do they have any type of gasket or seals inside them that would melt they're goin matte black...just for something different.
Hoppy
If i remember correctly there are 2 rubber ring seals in each caliper. I also don't think it's recommended to split the calipers, as they can leak afterwards, unless you fit new seals ov course. It may be worth checking to see if the seals are available to buy seperately before hand? justice
So if im gonna have them powder coated u recomend i have the front callipers split into ther two half's? is this what i need incase it all goes wrong? http://www.biggred.co.uk/toyotashop.html
merckx
is this what i need incase it all goes wrong? http://www.biggred.co.uk/toyotashop.html That's the kit for the piston seals which you should replace if you're stripping the caliper down. I don't know if it includes the 0 ring seals that you need to replace if you split the caliper, you'll have to ask them. Like I said before, Chris Wilson sells these 0 ring seals
Hoppy
It may be better mate.Powder paint dries like concrete, so if the ring seals did become damaged by heat, you would probably have some trouble splitting them once the paint is cured. Hoppy
I painted my UK's with spray can's as Steve stated above.I used heatproof primer, 3L2 colour matched spray paint from Sparesworld and heatproof laquer. The end result was cracking. They've been on the car for over 6 months now and they still look mint
justice
I'm starting to think I'm putting in to much effort here, when all i need to do is go all bart simpson on them with a spray can.... they're some sweet looking brakes u got ther Suprasplu
Hoppy
They took a while to do mate, but the end result was good.I used: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HYCOTE-RED-VHT-SPRAY-PAINT-400ml-BRAKE-CALIPERS-ETC-/130392808688?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item1e5c045cf0 + http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HYCOTE-CLEAR-VHT-SPRAY-PAINT-400ml-BRAKE-CALIPERS-/130392244435?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Body_Shop_Supplies_Paint&hash=item1e5bfbc0d3 The first link is the red paint i used, but to be honest the finish was a pinky/orange colour and it was very matt like primer. So i used it has it as primer.I then sprayed the normal red (Sparesworld) spray paint on top of that. And then i used 2 cans of the clear VHT paint to finish (Second link) Hope this helps
justice
what about ur decals, how and at what point in the process did u put them on?
Dnk
It may be better mate.Powder paint dries like concrete, so if the ring seals did become damaged by heat, you would probably have some trouble splitting them once the paint is cured. Ive just stripped a pair of uk spec front calipers that were powder coated and they came apart very easily. The internal seals that seal the 2 halves were fine and hadnt melted in the oven. The oven temp used on these was 200 degrees C, the outer dirt seals, pistons and piston seals were removed. If you split the two halves you will need to replace the internal seals, done correctly they wont leak. Ofcourse you need to put bolts in the threads M10X1 for the fluid line and bleed nipple and M12X1.25 for the mounting thread, you'll also need to mask off the piston bores. The seal kit you get off Toyota doesnt include the internal seals and isnt available from Toyota, i got mine from Chris Wilson Edited June 3, 2010 by Dnk (see edit history)
add heywood
I did mine with yellow hamerite and then got the decals off ebay. 5 months and some slow downs from 160+ and they still spot on
Hoppy
what about ur decals, how and at what point in the process did u put them on? I simply stuck the decals on top of laquer coat.I suppose you could stick them to the colour coat, and then laquer over them for peace of mind, but mine are fine after many months I would suggest getting the decals from below. These are good quality and are proper high temp ones. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TOYOTA-Supra-Brake-Caliper-Calliper-Decals-Stickers-/380238835484?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5888002f1c
justice
Thanks for all the help people. I have callipers stripped down (in half) but Iv'e left the pistons in as I would of thought they could stand the temperature of being powder coated. If I'm wrong?? I might need to hurry back down to the spray bay, oh please someone get back to me...
Hoppy
We'll i would remove all the rubber bits personally, but it's your choice mate Edited June 5, 2010 by Hoppy (see edit history)
justice
Yeah Iv'e taken off the rubber boots around the pistons but was just wondering if there is any rubber seals under the them? I thought piston seals were steal augmentation rings.
Dnk
the piston seals are some kind of rubber, very similar to the seals that seal both halves just bigger
justice
Thanks DNK I'll take a walk over there tomorrow and remove them. I miss driving my supra
