supra_aero
This inevitably a situation which happens in nearly every work places. Someone leaves, gets married, has a birthday or what have you. Now I am sure this has happenned to most people when its the guy you can't stand at work. The little collection goes around. What happens when its a "suggested donation" of £20 per person. Even sometimes if its £5, if its a loser I can't stand why should I pay!?! What do you do? I have been up to this point just paying. But I am only 27 and have another 33 years of this. Getting sick of doing this for people I can't stand who are just ;#';'s all year around. Why should I contribute?!!? Do any of you guys bravely just say no or make out you forgot your wallet (which I did once ). How do you get around it or do you just pay? I'd put up a poll if I knew how to. supra_aero
i would just say " no i dont like him " I wish I could but I just can't bring myself to it. I try to initiate the brown paper envelope pass around so no-one needs to know how much (if any) you contribute. I do love counting the money at the end of the day when its a losers birthday and its little more than a few pennies , enough for a water cooler coffee cheer and thats it. This practice seems to be more rare the more highly paid you get. Its now up to £20 the contributions I'm expected to make. Getting silly now imo! Why can't I donate what I want to. SupraP-Z
The way i see it, if your work colleagues are preparing contributions and chipping in for you (including the loser) then fine...when its his/her special occasion and the money sack goes around, give back what you received - its only fair. But if not.... F*** it! Id cut a penny in half, make my donation and say its what they're worth! lol. That also ensures that next year you can give the same donation (If you saved the other half of the penny)
supra_aero
I still want to know how you guys "appropriately" say you won't contribute. Please give me tips.

Then you are screwed. Unless you holla on Thursday about your birthday plans in a blatant manner.
Snooze
Ours get passed round in an envelope - there has never been a "suggested" contribution amount.
supra_aero
Amazed how many people just would say no. Very surprised.
Spike3.0
I've been in similar situations before, I'd refuse. Think about it, your never going to see them again and good ridance. I'd sit back and smile that they're leaving.
johnny g
Just pay it - or you could alienate yourself from colleagues who might think you're the biggest minge on MkIV
TopgunTT
Find one of those joke £20 notes from the joke shop or use some kids play money to stick in there
supra_aero
lol - with johnny. These contributions add up mind. A modest £60 per year over another 33 years is £1980!!!!!
Animal
Everywhere I've worked has just had the brown envelope passed round and voluntary contributions requested. I just sign the card and pass the envelope on. I don't buy cakes on my birthday either. Nor do I eat the cakes bought by other people, so I feel justified in that. AndrewOW
If you don't like him, try doing something else with the envelope, which may distract them enough to think you've contributed. Make out you're throwing a large coin up in the air and 'catching' it in the open envelope. Demonstrated by the fantastic Mr Eric Morecambe here: da45knClNA8 Classic! supra_aero
Andrew I'll have to check that out when I get home. Youtube blocked at work. I guess I need to man up and "just say no". Be fun to see how that goes down with the manager mind and all that "team ethic" they preach to us.
stevie_b
Put a couple of washers in the envelope when it gets passed around. Not that I've ever done this of course.
