Tortoise?

If you do get one, you will need to think seriously about training classes. There is nothing worse than a badly controlled tortoise - if one runs into your shin, you will know about it. Classes are usually advertised in the local paper: most are free, but you will need to supply your own lettuce, a whistle and a rolled-up newspaper.

Also:

1. The tortoise was voted Britain's 5th most popular attic pet in a recent poll.

2. Actor Tim Piggott-Smith can lift a box of over twenty tortoises above his head without smiling.

3. In the quest to find the perfect filament for light bulbs,Edison tested several species of tortoise, before eventually settling on carbon.

4. The most successful tortoise in the history of pop is Rene Dif, from Danish-Norwegian group Aqua. His hit single 'Barbie Girl' is widely believed to be a coded reference to having unnatural relations with a chaffinch, a practice outlawed by Bob the Tortoise King in 1903.

Yeh, I got her a 1 year old Hermann tortoise, which she named Nigel, after her dad (at his request! :D)

When we got him he was quite shy and didn't want to eat or move or anything. But after bathing under the heat lamp for a week or so, he started to (excuse the pun) come out of his shell! :D

Now we've had him almost 2 months and he's a really cheeky little guy! He likes to come out of his pen and wonder around the garden on sunny days, and he moves really fast for such a small thing! I actually lost him once in the living room! I took my eye off him for like a minute and he'd escaped into the front room (out of the living room, through the hall and into the front room) I was turning the place upside down trying to find him!

He still likes to hide in the corner and sleep for ages too, but I'm guessing that's because he's still young and needs rest. We bathe him everyday too, in warm water, which helps keep him hydrated and encourages bowel movements.. You should see the size of the poops he does! They're HUGE! I wonder where he keeps it?! And how he passes it?! :rlol:

If your friend is concidering getting one, then I'd recommend joining a forum and asking questions, doing a lot of reasearch, and making sure you know what to expect. They take a lot of looking after and are only allowed to eat certain things (NOT lettuce!!).

If you need any info, just ask and i'll be happy to help :)

I'll get some pictures uploaded. He's quite cute, and has a nice shell pattern too.

We don't have the chippins in anymore, they irritated his eyes. We have old tea towels down now. Will be replacing that with topsoil though. And the lamp that came with the tortoise table was pathetic, so we got a 150W redbulb, which is a lot warmer!
