Rear Diff - Replace Open Diff with LSD

Recommended Posts

Basically my rear diff is blown and i need a new one.

Ive got a 1994 n/a manual Supra and in a year or so's time im looking to do a twin turbo conversion so rather than replacing my open diff with another one i would rather replace it with an LSD to save doing it later on.

Ive been searching the forum but i keep drawing a blank.. would a 6 speed manual LSD fit a 5 speed manual Supra? (probably a stupid question)

Thanks, Lofty

No a 6 speed manual wouldnt fit.

A smaller cased auto as im pretty sure there the same as a NA LSD. .. im after and LSD for mine aswel :(

The facelift (with v161 gearbox) TT manual diff is a direct swap, but the ratio's mean much longer gearing. The diff on the TT v160 boxed cars is the large casing and as you say not a direct fit.

Would a auto lsd throw out the gear ratios on his na manual? i know it would on a tt manual.

Yes, it will but not as much as the manual TT diff's. It'll mean slightly longer gearing that using the NA one, it wouldn't be hugely noticable though.

Ideally, you'd be looking for an NA LSD diff (there were a few with these). Not sure on the prop differences, Jamie you know more about those.

I know its a bit of work but if he got his hands on a TT6 diff he could swap the ratios and be laughing in no time

Yes, that would be possible if the doner was a the "small" one, but no if it's the "large" one (which is what the majority of 6spd diffs are)

so basically what you guys are saying is if i can get my hands on the smaller TT6 diff (manual or auto??) and then change the gear ratios around ill be fine and sorted?

You might need a prop aswell, i think the bolt spacing is different, although you may be able to swap the ends over on the diff, been a while since i messed about with them and i cant remember now.

The Supra was fitted with 2 different diff casings, left is an early model 6spd TT diff (B), right is the smaller diff (A) used on ALL other Supra models, including the facelift 6spd TT.

Yours will be the smaller one on the right, so as long as you get another small diff then it will be a straight swap.

i have just baught an lsd from a pre facelift tt auto with the small casing so im guessing it will be a straight swap?

homer would it be possible for you to do a comparison of each gear to give me an idea how much longer it would make them and how i can expect it to drive ?

my rear tyres are 285/35/18

i cant do it myself because exel wont work on my laptop for some reason

thanks

ok,

i ahve tryed to work these things out the old fasiond way.

this is what iv come up with

W58 @ 6800rpm 285/35/18

gear na/open diff / tt auto lsd

1. 39 / 42

2. 68 / 73

3. 100 / 109

4. 128 / 138

5. 164 / 177

dose this about rite? if so i think it would enhance the drice as imho 1st and 2nd are too short with the open diff

edit , just beated too it lol

thanks daryl thats great

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry to BUMP this thread guys but I've been doing some reading up on old threads about this.

I'm looking at getting a LSD TT auto diff for my 5 speed but in some posts people are saying it won't fit & others say it will......

I'm just trying to find out if I will have a problem if I buy this diff or would I need to go for a different type?

Thanks for any help
