pistonbroke
As most of you probably do, you sit there browsing pistonheads/autotrader/carandclassic etc etc with a budget for a possible purchase, waiting for something to jump out at you. In the next 3 years, I'm looking to spend 20k on my next car. I was drawn to the new Camaro at one point, then the rapidly depriciating C6 jumped out at me, the one with the LS3 engine. Then it dawned on me that these cars being much newer, will be in the highest tax bracket of £450 per year, I know it's not a huge amount of money to pay, but for some reason, it's a kind of mental block which leaves a bad taste in my mouth at the thought of paying out that much to the government for a car I'll only be using at weekends. So, here's what you're tasked with. You have 20k in your pocket, but your money can only be spent on a car that is 2001 built or older.......what would you buy? supra_aero
I've pondered this many times. I've come to realisation above £12k, there is nothing really worth it until you get to £30-35k bracket. Just my opinion. You don't get a whole lot more car for £20k above £12k. Vipers/360s/F355s/550s/diablos start at £30-35k + I'd rather sit in the supra/rx7 at £6-12k until I reach the ferrari/lambo level than drive a midrange supercar (which is what I am effectively doing). pistonbroke
In no particular order. 2001 VVTI 6 speed Supra The others are all post 2001, so higher tax bracket. I hear you on the 2001 supra, plenty of change form 20k too
johnny g
Every day car or toy? I think he said weekends.... I'd go with Jamie's list - but possibly add an E46 M3 or a Ford Mustang 4.6 to the list
pistonbroke
Every day car or toy? I want the car to be good fun, but don't really fancy a balls out track racer with no luxury. ------- Nice work Michael, bar the last one...................which we're not allowed to mention

johnny g
Yep - Jevansio is your man for those. Awesome cars - just very good at a lot of things. You know it's ALWAYS going to work.
miko_supra
I'd go with either a 996 porsche or a c6 vette
marc_p
Porsche 996 Carrera would be my choice.
Gaz6002
You could have a Z4M coupe... they're a decent motor. To be honest though, granted you're asking the question on an owner's club site but you'd go a long way to beat the grin factor that a decent £20k Supra will provide. There are a few cars for sale now that I'd be looking at. Built over here, to top spec, and maintained with no expense spared. Faster than most things on the road, too. johnny g
Honda NSX You're talking £30k plus for a 2001 NSX and £25k for a 1998 one really.

CarlT67
Its got to be the 996 Turbo, if you can get one for under 20K. Something about that shaped 911 in black. If not a turbo then the C4S, some say the more desirable of the 996 models. They're great looking, fantastic performance and all while being reliable. pistonbroke
The 996 turbos can be had for just over 20k, so in 3 years, they'll be more or less there. Surely the balls out turbo porka is the one to have. I'm pretty sure my BPU supra would serve the non turbo carrera its ass.(maybe not in the corners )
johnny g
My VVTi TT is very slightly quicker than a standard 996TT - from when I had a chase with Jevansio
hackin_n_bashin
I'd be tempted with something like this, and they seem to be creeping down too, couldn't get a reasonable one for less than £28k a couple of years ago http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1634860.htm
johnny g
that is very cheap for an NSX. Lovely cars.
pistonbroke
Cheers Johnny, I might have to bung a lengthy PM Jevansios way asking his opinions of the 996TT. I know RMS failures can be catastrophic on the 996 engines costing major if they fail, though after repaired, the part fitted was modified to prevent future issues, I'd imagine older 996's will have had this work done already.
