BrianBunning
They wont be able to get away with it with cars already in the system surely? I'm sure it will only apply to cars registered after 2005 for example! I know this may be controversial, but ive always thought it should be on the fuel anyway and scrap tax discs! It makes sense really as the more you drive the more your car damages the roads/environment! Im not sure how they would cover tax exempt cars im sure they could do a cashback kind of scheme
ewizzy
Meh, If they did this, I would be employing some tax disc avoidance tactics IE not fecking buying one Or the alternative, put my engine in my Dads 1964 MGB roadster
SteveR
I wouldn't worry about it, it's just yet another tree-hugging hippy no-brain brigade suggesting somethign else ludicrous to get attention - seems to be the popular approiach at the moment. Ignore them and they'll go away.
Supragal
They better go away!
RedM
Isn't so much easier to penalise the 'average' person than to actually go after the real culprits. Mind you, I can't see this ever happening. Can anyone say vote loser?
Markie
Is it just me not knowing much about the other countries ie USA, that the UK always seems to be worrying about this emissions stuff and the USA/Japan etc they dont give much of a shit.. Just UK no-balls government?
paul mac
hopefully as long as 2 jags prescott is in power we should be safe, i really think the guy is a prat but he does like his big motors
SteveR
There is no way any government would say, 'hmmm, we're going to put RFL up by 5 times it's current amount', and live to tell the tale. RFL is such a tiny tiny amount of givernment income compared to fuel tax it's a non-starter & no-brainer; shall we introduce this rediculous hippy scheme and cause loads fo trouble for ourselves, or just stick to our own taxation schemes (which make us more money than we need anyway) and in the process avoid riots & being thrown out of office... hmmm..... Try and tax the motorist more, lol, we're already fighting back with protests and fuel blockades and the like...

RedM
I don't believe it would make much difference whoever was in power. The motorist is a far easier target than big industry.

tbourner
They know motorists aren't going to stop motoring, they know the country needs vehicles to live, so it's easy money for them to say 'we are taxing motorists by a huge amount to stop the polution' when they know damn well none of them are going to stop - it just gives them an excuse to get more money!! I don't think this'll happen though, as said it would start riots and blockades again - too much hassle.
penguin
no they won't go away..... the public are too use to taking it up the Ar$e... look at the fuel protests from a few years ago, and look at the price's were paying today............ Aerotop Dave
I always thought it should be calculated on mileage and engine size. 3 litre and 20,000 miles a year - £200 1 litre and 20,000 miles a year - £150 3 litre and 5000 miles a year - £150 1 litre and 5000 miles a year - £100 Something like that. Then it's a combination of how much fuel/pollution and how much wear/tear on the roads. I don't mind paying more than someone in a 1 litre Micra, but not when they do 20,000 miles a year and I only do 5000.
tbourner
So would that GPS based 'per mile' charging system be better? That would mean the ones that have a cheap nasty car for work, and only do 3000 miles per year in the Supra at weekends will be alright, but the M5 driving sales rep will get taxed to death for not driving a 1.4 fiesta!!! The only problem is we all know they will just gradually increase the charging until we can't afford it again!!!
tbourner
http://www.direct.gov.uk/Topics/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/AllAboutVehicleTax/AllAboutVehicleTaxDetails/fs/en?CONTENT_ID=4022042&chk=NWRRKi There you go, just register your car as an agricultural tractor and you'll be fine. I wonder if I can advertise in the local paper (maybe with an unfortunate typo in my phone number) that I'm a disabled person vehicle, willing to transport people for free to wherever they want to go!! Might be a bit of trouble getting them in and out though.

Yeah, that sounds fine to me. The person with the cheap nasty car for work and the Supra still has to pay for 2 lots of car tax.
