Lauren R
I work shifts: week 1 8am-5pm, the next 12pm-8.30pm. I get in 5-10 mins early to have a cuppa but I start on the dot, and am ready to leave on the dot. That said, I'm a trainee vet nurse so when it's busy, I have stayed 1, 2, 3 hours later, and it's not uncommon to miss your break. You kind of have to, it's a close knit team and if I leave on time when everythings gone mental, the other nurses have a really hard time. My boss is quite good about it though, I can usually take holiday at short notice or leave early later that week and he'll help out if I need a favour. Like has been said, it works both ways. RedM
Get there for start time and leave on the dot, happy to be flexible and work on longer/start early but then when i've asked a favour to leave half hour early I got the third degree on how I'd have to make it up....wtf It should work both ways but doesn't, also learnt over the years that you really are just a number and any positive attitude means bugger all come redundancy time so I won't do extra hours to my contracted ones unless I'm paid for it. I could grow to like you. Being treated like just another cog in the machine is doing my head in. I'm hoping to get the okay to move to a place where you aren't a number and where everyone really is equal. Fingers crossed and saying no more in case I jinx things. Ewen
I'm salary paid, based on a 35 hour week. I'm usually in at nine, dont usually take lunch, and I'm out anywhere between 6 and 10 pm, averaging say, a 55 hour week. Sometimes I'm in at 6 am, sometimes I'm a half hour late. I put the hours in on weekdays so I dont feel guilty about having weekends off. I'm always losing out on several days holiday at the end of the year 'cos I don't take them as often as I should. I usually wear Calvin Klein underpants (black) and dress to the left. I pretend not to notice the new girl in Personnel. I go outside to fart, and I kiss the badge every hour or so. Completly agree with that, i make sure as much of our work load is complete, (bearing in mind there is all way's someone off). That any work that cant be completed is sorted ie customer's warned in plenty of time. I can normaly tell buy lunch time (which i have while i work) what job's wont be completed.I will add where i work if you stay late once! the upper managment think that's your new finish time (foc of course). Allway's in on time & allway's ready to go on time.
Paul
I will add where i work if you stay late once! the upper managment think that's your new finish time (foc of course). Exactly, a mate of mine has a fairly well paid Management job and he bent over backwards in the early days doing longer hours. Now a few years on he is often working until 9 and 10 at night (usual finishing time is 5) and now if he ever goes on time this is frowned upon !! What a mug, if he works out the hourly rate then it would be about £6/hr as he doesn't get o/t for it. I really believe that most people who do silly long hours are either arselickers that are no good at their job and need longer to carry out their duties or are very insecure. Paul
The way I look at it is either people can't plan their day or cope with the role or the firm is crap and is getting people to do one and a half jobs for the price of one. How can a responsible company sit back and let employees do silly hours and potentially wreck their lives?
jon5698
I am contracted to 40hrs a week but i am also on a salary, i am supposed to work from 9-5 but never do. Most times i work between 10-15hrs overtime a week and often leave the house at 04.00am to get to places for an 08.00 start. Whenever i get back to the factory early, i make sure all my paperwork and reports are done and just go home. My boss tries to say i don't finish till 17.00 and i just tell him i have done over my 40hrs! Getting really sick of working all this overtime for nothing considering they charge well over £70 an hour for me being on site, but in these times i also know i am lucky to have a safe job. Abz
The way I look at it is either people can't plan their day or cope with the role or the firm is crap and is getting people to do one and a half jobs for the price of one. How can a responsible company sit back and let employees do silly hours and potentially wreck their lives? What about if you enjoy your job & like to stay behind for a bit? I work in what we call the Operation's team in the IT Department for a Law Firm. I don't mind staying late or working odd hours, I enjoy the work that I do & take an interest in the projects I am working on. Though you do get people thinking because you enjoy your job you are arse-licking (Not directed at you Paul). Other area's in our team people rush out of work & leave things behind because they are to work a certain time. I think the main responsibilty lies in the managers, I luckily have a very relaxed but hard working manager who appriciates the extra work I get done & for staying late to resolve issues which could take 2 days to fix, fixed within a couple of hours. We are going slightly off topic, but to Michael's thread question, I think people who arrive before their start time.

Tony
Problem with my boss is the firm is his life & he think's we should be the same. I work to live not live to work, when im there it's 99.9% on it, by the same token i want to be away on time, dont see the problem with that? But he sure does lol

TJP
Say you are contracted to start at 9am and finish at 5pm - do you arrive at 9am and then prepare for work, boot PC, make coffee, have a chat etc or do you get in early so you can actually start doing some work at 9am? When 5pm comes are you already packed up and ready to go by 5pm or is that your guide to start making a move? I'm not asking because this bothers me or because someone at my work is doing something I don't agree with, I'm of the school of thought where it doesn't matter as long as the work gets done, I'm just curious what other people think. Depends what company you are working for and what is on offer. I work in HR so deal with all these issues, current company pay me crap and no bonus so just stick to the hours stated (get in just before 9 and leave just after 5), last company paid me loads, big bonus and lots of benefits slogged my guts out for them 24/7 with a blackberry. Hoppy
Where i work you do your basic 8 hours a day and the quantity of work you do is just that. The next shift comes in and takes over from where you left off.No matter how good or crap you are As i previously mentioned anything over 37 hours a week is overtime, which you get paid time +1/2 for, and double time on a Sunday and overtime is offered pretty much every day of the week, every week. Although it's a super hot enviroment to work in, due to a 1000deg bar furnace, 400deg tempering oven + a 350deg powder paint curing oven.So i don't work to much overtime if i can help it!! especially in the summer
brettjones
well i am in charge of my department at rolls-royce i get paid for 50hrs a week but can do 20hrs over this unpaid to get the job done
