tooquicktostop
Well I have played golf for years on and off, never get time to play very often due to work and have ranged from 16 to 24 as a handicap, currently playing off 20... just I keep my "nicer" set of clubs in Spain as I play there 3 times a year (my parents live there), they are John Letters and I play Ok with them but they are old now Here I have a very cheap set (Tesco's... don't laugh) I want to replace my UK set, I want a club that is forgiving and is something that will last for a few years, any recommendations, I have looked at Ping G15 and X20's both feel good, I will not be playing much more than once a month so will never be the next Tiger Woods, also looking for places that have a deal on the best clubs

MaveriK
Too hard to say over a thread having never seen you swing a club so have no idea on stance, club head speed, height etc etc etc. I would visit a few local pro's and ask their advice, they should look at your all round game and advise you accordingly. DO NOT mention you want Pings until after they have talked you through a few options else the £ will be the deciding factor and not whats best for you. They should offer you a few clubs to hit balls with and watch you doing so, only then will they and you know whats best. If they dont offer this service and want you buy off the shelf i would walk away. Mizuno and i believe Ping should be custom fitted for you, height, hand size, stance etc. Try and not be blinkered into Ping, keep your mind open. DodgyRog
I have used Callaway Pro series for years now, although I dont play much anymore, got to an 8 handicap when playing regular, now at 14, mainly due to short game, as I am lucky to play once a month. Really you should go to a decent Pro-shop that has a good Pro and a driving range and test a selection of clubs in your price range. The Pro should be able to assist your choice and custom fit your clubs to you. The first decent set I bought were Callaways and they were custom fitted and it knocked 2 strokes off my handicap instantly, since then I have always had my clubs made for me. I am still using Callaway Pro-series X14's with Super Stiff pro shafts that Callaway brought in from America for me, as they didn't supply them to the UK. I have tried a few of the newer sets over the past few years and can't warrant the extra money for them as the X-14 still do the job for me. Although now my fitness levels are droping, I think I might have to change them, as I dont generate the power from the top of the swing like I used to, making the extra stiff shafts a bit to much now. Anyway as said find a decent shop with a wide range of clubs and a decent Pro and book in for a trail and fitting session, having clubs fitted is a must and will definately help your game. ellis
To be honest mate, it's what's at the top of the club not the bottom that matters! A good player will be able to use just about any club, with a high handicapper you'd be better off buying a relatively cheap(ish) set and spending the rest on lessons. I had my Ping S57s custom fitted and play off 6 but, to be honest, I play as well with those as I did with my old Mizuno MP32s. It's me that makes the difference, not the clubs! Ping G15s are good all rounders but not cheap.
Scott
Callaway X22's I was told. I hadn't even mentioned them, I only mentioned the Ping. Great clubs, the ones my Dad bought too.
creative
as above..... I used to play off scratch when I was 14. Started with a set of blades... never good when you get it wrong! lol Currently have a set of mizuno TPZ's. took me a year to get them many years ago but the game changes sooooo much. standards have changed these days as have products....(whatever happened to ballata balls?) you really need to get to a pro that can analyse your swing. what works for one person... will NOT work for another! Are you a blade fan? cavity back? weighted, soft shaft, stiff shaft etc etc... I dont believe in named clubs as every person is different. Who cares where they came from, so long as they work for you!
