Track car for under £1k

I've been thinking for a while to get a cheap car so I can start doing track days etc in it. What sort of car would be a good choice for less than a grand? I could spend more but want it to be cheap and cheerfull. Here is the list I've been thinking of so far...

1. Old Fords ie, xr2i, xr3i, rs turbo

2. 306 Gti

3. Saxo VTR / VTS

4. Mitsubishi FTO (I know there a bit more money but Ive seen the V6 ones for about 1.5K)

Any I've missed that would be good?

Plus, everything you've mentioned is FWD... I'd steer clear of that if at all possible.

I've recently bought an MX5 for some summer fun and they are great, loads of parts readily available for them, brilliant handling aswell, as soon as it gets to winter the MX5 is coming off the road and getting built into a pure track car.

£1000 will go a long way on trackday insurance and you are driving a decent car on track, not some old wreck.

I see what you mean, but I like to have the cars seperate, when I have a track car, it is just that, it barely see's the road, which is what will be happening with the MX5, it will be completely stripped down, I've already got a rollcage coming today for it, then hopefully remove the windscreen in favour of a little aeroscreen, whereas with the Supra I enjoy using that on the road as it is, it's comfy and civilized and I've been trecking the country in of late and I don't really have an urge to put it on a track.

I just need a civilized daily drive now, then I have my perfect setup.

Im the opposite, i like my Supra to be able to do everything, its easy to build a track car or a drag car, but to have a car that is good at everything and still nice to drive on the street is where it gets hard.:)

I've thought that too, but then I think it's a lot to lose if you have an incident on track. I love throwing my NA around on track as it's relatively cheap, meaning I can go all out and not worry too much if I come off/hit anything (which I have done a few times) - best way to learn! :)
