Using Hypnosis to remember a lost password, possible?

Ok, I'm getting ready to be shot down in flames here and expect the jovual to serious replies to be about 25 to 1, but is it possible to use hypnosis to remember a lost password.

I have a True Crypt container that I've found that has some family photo's in it and cannot remember the password.

The password was set in or around 1991 and has been lost through the years.

I've only just found the file after a good few years hiding away on my HD and would like to get into it.

I've been using true.crypt.brute with a selection of words to what I think it is, but no joy so far.

So fire away, but what do you think... possible or not?

Paul.

What ISP / email / eBay etc did you use back then? Can you reactivate any old accounts and get a password reminder that might be the same as the one used on this?

I think the big question here though is what would be so secret about some family photos that means you want to encrypt them... is it porn?

Good point!

Last time I forgot the password to my illegal porn'o stash I nearly contemplated suicide. :( Luckily my mum reminded me what it was!

I think hypnosis is unlikely to help you. Controlled studies of hypnosis and memory tend to show:

1) modest positive effects on retrieval - slightly more information is recalled accurately

2) substantial increase in errors in recall - it's easy for false information to become embedded among real memories under hypnosis.

3) increase in the confidence of recall - people tend to have more faith in the accuracy of their recollections.

Under hypnosis, many people will describe their memories of the past with great fluency and confidence. Which sounds great, until you learn that if they are asked about their memories of the future, they will do exactly the same thing. :)

It wasn't as straight forward as being the same as another one, and being a geek I was trying out something new..

Came across it the day and thought... Bugger...

A mate of mine does hypnotism. I'm sure he'd be willing to help give it a try. Want me to PM you his number?

Yeah, I wouldn't mind.

Thanks dude, I understand that it might not work, but I'll definatly know if it doesn't... Computer says NO.

I'd say no. I think you are following the best route at the moment.

Get some horsepower onto the brute force crack. I spent 6 days on one once :D

It was Ed's porn stash :innocent:

It could be up to a 21char password, which puts it into the realm of being almost impossible to brute force it.

I think I remember the words/dates that it would/might have been made up from, but not the order or case.

Been trying with different passwords, current try has done 16k different passwords and is at approx 15% through the run.
