One day the real world will make itself very apparent. Your Dad has taken the easy way out by buying out your grief.

Has he done that a lot throughout your life? You will be seriously de-sensitised to bad things happening if all your life you have been given expensive items to make you feel better.

I find a hug, a gathering of friends and family, perhaps a few jars with people close would help me a lot better than a cold object handed out of pity.

Can't buy love or happiness mate :)

your bang on right my ps3 brings me happyness not money

In best lost voice "previously on JAZZ"

Jazz' brother buys a watch and gives it to dad.

Jazz sadly loses his dog and to cheer him up dad gifts the gift to Jazz.

Jazz wears watch to work and colleagues ask "why are you wearing expensive watch?"

Jazz unsure of watches value consults mystical forum for advice.

Jazz using his gift for photography takes pics of said watch.

Jazz' dad says the watch is fake. Jazz decides to keep watch.

Jazz brother says its real.

If its reall Jazz will sell to fund skyline then buy a fake.

I think thats it or is it?

There may be rats or other things involved though :D

Loads of good fakes around. If it is fake though, you wont have all the proper paper work.

Heres a dodgy one...even has the display back.

As you're probably the man in the know, isn't it a real bad idea to take a potentially fake watch to a retailer to check authenticity?

I've heard about people taking fake rolexes to rolex dealerships and having them confiscated etc but wondered if it was just crap.

:) Im just an enthusiast, no where near what Id call in the know.

I've heard similar stories, but only anecdotal. Theres three types of fake watches...those marketed and sold as replicas, those which are tourism tat, and those that are deliberately sold as the genuine article.

The replicas are very close to the original, but no paperwork, no makers box and made with small deliberate differences to the design. Take the back off, and they are sussed immediately as the movements are most usually cheap chinese copies. Some replicas use better movements, but again, obviously not original spec. The original outlet always makes it clear the buyer is buying a replica.

The nasty tourist tat fakes are so blatantly wrong, most genuine watch makers dont care about them...such as the $5 Rolexes sold in bazars and side streets abroad.

The top-end fakes are something else. Top end materials, movements, proper boxes and paperwork, including any chronometer certification. These are sometimes incredibly hard to tell if fake...even retailers have sold them unknowingly. It comes down to the diameter of a luminous dot, or the exact colour and font of the date letter. Rolexes are the most copied, but all high end brands are. E-bay is rife with them, buyer beware indeed.

The only high-end watch buying advice Ive ever given to someone who asked me, was to buy from an authorised dealer. There are lots of genuine internet sites selling genuine watches, but the maker will not honour any warranty against a watch not bought from an authorised dealer, even if the Internet site says they will.
