Starter motor problems (please help)

Hi

Supra yesterday intermittently and today all morning having problems starting. Turning the key and I get nothing, lights on dash all still there but just a click when the key is turned all the way. I got a guy to look at it who checked the battery etc and then gave the starter motor and hit with a metal pole (sounds very technical  ) and then it started. I then drove to a garage who said a new starter motor and to be fitted would be £210. Is this a pretty standard sort of cost and does it need to be specifically a Supra starter motor? (Or shall i just keep a metal pole in the car for the future???)

Any help much appreciated as i'm not hands on with anything engine related and so cannot attempt cleaning the starter motor myself unfortunately

It's a common problem, I believe you can get the start motor rebuilt, I know Chris Wilson on here does them for a lot less than £210. You'd still need to get it out and sent to him (or get the car to him).

Its just a few screws on the motor to open it up and replace a couple of worn connectors. It was about £80 for motor removed, refurbed and refitted at my local garage (and they were by no means a specialist). Can get the refurb kit off ebay for £10.

This was for my gs300 which is same engine as the NA supra

Indeed, starter motor contacts need replacing. Very common problem. Toyota do a kit for around £20 ish, or ebay as supra_aero said.
