Cloud of smoke & no second turbo

I just went out for a brief test of my TT, trying to troubleshoot a misfire that's plagued me since having an AEM FIC fitted..

Full throttle, through first, just going to the high end of second and there was a strange suction noise, like something being pulled through a pipe, and a big cloud of smoke came out the rear (I don't know what colour it was, it's quite dark out).

I drove the car gently for a short way, engine sounded fine, AFR/Temps looked fine, and I was only ~5mins from home.. slowly revved it up past 4.5k and it would build boost until the second turbo should come online, then there's the sound of pressure escaping and no boost..

Could this mark the end of my second turbo? (is this car cursed?)

Sounds like the 2nd tubby to me I'm afraid buddy. You will be very lucky if it is something to do with a pipe IMO. If a pipe is off you won't get any/much boost from the 1st or 2nd tubby, it won't dump when the 2nd one should be coming online.

I hope it isn't though, fingers crossed for you :)

It might be the EGCV hose popping off, that'll stop the second turbo from spinning, so when the IACV opens, the boost from #1 exits backwards back into the atmosphere.

When my egcv was stuck the boost dumped but slowly came back up again. I was still hitting full boost high up the rev range. When my 2nd tubby popped I had next to nothing all the way.

Bang and smoke doesn't sound good though, but here's hoping :)

This isn't stuck though, it's "not opening at all" - it stops all exhaust gas flow through #2 so the boost from #1 cheerfully backspins it and exits stage left.

I wish he wasn't! I had picked up some hopes that it was only a pipe. :)

Not sure on my best option now, Chris recommended some new turbos, a rebuild is likely to be quite pricey, and I'm not sure how much extra a mild single build would cost..

Came off an Auto TT. Currently has 100k on it with the conversion being done at 70k kms. They were taken off in November. Swapped with another set because the 2nd tubby was thought to be fooked but it ended up being the pressure tank causing all the trouble. Sitting in sozzle in plastic bags in the garage since.

I'll check the play/condition properly tomorrow and get some pics for you.

Cheers
