Insurance is messed up! :|

Hi guys,

 

I'm still looking for a Supra unfortunately

 

I called up my insurance company and I don't know whether they're missing a few screws up there or what but here what I can and can't get insured on.

 

Supra SZ NA - only a 1993 nothing newer

Supra GZ/RZ - no way!

UK spec Supra - Yeah sure only £50 more a year than my mr2

 

What I don't understand is the year of the SZ (I wouldn't mind an SZ to be honist Supra's are beautiful cars anyway) and the UK spec Supra has a higher standard BHP than the import so...anyway I don't know how they calculate it but I wish I could afford one though

 

If anyone could shine any light on why I can only get insurance on a 1993 car and nothing newer that would be great!

I assume the GZ/RZ are the turbo options and your insurance company does not insure imports hence why they will only insure the UK spec.

As far as J-spec imports are concerned, they are the same BHP as the UK spec despite what you may of heard.

Oh right thanks Carl yeah most insurance companies don't like imports unfortunately but the SZ is an import aswell but can't seem to understand why I can only get insurance on a 1993 car :S oh well at least I've managed to get insured

They are probably quoting you on a MkIII (since they were made only up to '93), many of the insurance companies databases don't have the Mkiv import details in them. This sort of problem is surprisingly common.

no one else seems to want to insure me, I'm 19 years old by the way lol ah I might just have to stick with my mr2 for a bit longer

This would make sence, how about buy a supra and just get it up to scratch then insure it at a later date. That way you have time to get it how you want it. Mine comes off the road so often for new bits etc. So why not get it done now?

You do know the Supra is a insurance group 20, hence why it might be trouble insuring a 19 year old with limited experience.

Insurance groups dont mean much to my company I tried to get a quote on a v reg rover 600 auto as a 2nd car to run my mother around in and they wanted £1850 a year! I only pay £1227 for my supe with everything declared :O

When i had the civic vti run around i was paying more for insurance on that than mine.

 

Its retarded how they work it out. I now run around in a 1984 pimp civic and although cheaper to insure the excess is like £500 how do they manage?

Yeah insurance groups don't seem to matter to my insurance company either, I think they just don't like imports, I can get insured on a uk spec supra or a v spec skyline GTR (which is a uk car aswell) for about £80 more a year than my mr2. But they're both so expensive :|

 

I mean there's nothing wrong with my car it's still fast and the 3sgte engine is powerful enough just I've always loved supra's from day 1!

Which insurance company is this? It might be worth trying for a quote from a company that specialises in imports / modified cars. Someone like Sky or Adrian Flux.

I'm with admiral, the only reason I can get insured on these high insurance group car is because my family have a multicar policy which reduces the premium, plus I'm the second driver on the car which also reduces it a lot. I'm not fronting the insurance putting my dad as the main driver because he drives my car more than I do anyway because I'm at uni at the moment plus he seems to like jap cars aswell

I think you'll find if you ring them again they might insure you, I'm insured through them on my 1997 TT import
