New project purchased Golf MK1 GTI

Well another project is about to start now the Corvette is "finished", A MK1 Golf GTI has been sort, found and purchased, it has taken a while to find the right car for the right price, there are a lot of very nice mint cars for sale but they are very expensive, this car was cheap and worth a go, it has a full white 1/2 leather interior and will make a good base for a project

The car will need to spend some time with Dave (supraloopy) to get it perfect (he does not know it yet!:D), he did such a good job on all my other cars in the past

I will keep this thread alive with more pictures and updates as they happen, the stickers will have to go first !, I have added a nice one of the Vette as well from the WIM Supra day :)

Nice clean example.

Good luck with it. What are your plans.

Plan to repair anything that is not working, can not stand stuff not working, this includes the driver electric window and a very odd set of kill switches (will be removed)

I plan to make good a small crack on the clipper kit and to repair and re-finish the little rust spot over the rear arch. The car will then have a set of Recaro white leather seats fitted up front

I am completely new to GTI's so mods are a real unknown to me, I will of course get Dave to give it a full service then look at tuning mods, I know you can add bigger engines but I would like to keep the costs down and I am sure an R32 lump fitted is not cheap!

Bigboystoys.com seems to have a few nice ideas, have a week to think about it before I pick it up :)

Is the all white with the white interior not rare in the MK1's? I'm sure there was something special about a white model with the white roof & interior?

I know nothing about VW's I just remember being part of a conversation regarding them at one point.

Looks cracking mate :)

you have far too much time on your hands:p

p.s .....looks good;)

:D, How are you John, about to start a new job so not so much time on my hands any more

Don't know where to store it and never tuned a VW before, in fact that makes it more fun, so many parts available and quite a reasonable price for upgrades, going to have a go at some of it myself...... that should be interesting :D

I am looking for some tasteful mods and to make it super clean, not sure an R32 conversion would be that stable to drive, it was the same story with my C4 Vette, it was always the plan to supercharge it but after driving it for the last few months any serious power above stock would be just dangerous as the suspension set up is so poor

Storm racing looks like a fun place though :D

The garage told me it was very rare in all white, I just thought it was usual salesman chat

Got it for £2200 after a lot of bartering which I thought was OK, will have to see how reliable it is before I consider that to be great value

Give storm developments a ring. VW experts like no other.

http://www.stormdevelopments.co.uk/

They do a cracking Rotrex supercharger kit for most models of VW. Not sure if the mk1 is covered but if you are engine swapping anyway.......:eyebrows:

They are just down the road from me, and always seems busy (also they seem to still be around, so must be doing something right ;))

I've also heard good things about them but I will caveat that with the fact that I've not had any dealings with them.

Have a little look into it mate. The guy I was talking to might have been bullshitting but the impression I got was seriously rare, very small production numbers.

I know you are not one for keeping cars original but this might not be the ideal modding candidate :D

Will have to ask the MK1 GTI owners club see what they have to say, I have changed my ways actually, I dont over mod cars now..... IMO anyway :D, have been very guilty of over doing it in the past, changing things for changes sake

The Vette is almost returned to stock glory with just a Forced Induction kit and a full decat, the rest is all restored stock

Thats what I was thinking. IMO a lot of people selling these cars don't really know what they have. Don't get me wrong, it might still be bull.

As you say, the guys on the forum will definitely know the rarity :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Bet Dave did, could have the roof down and the wind blowing through his...err! :D

Theres an r32 engine on pistonheads ATM for £800! If you didn't want to go that route I know quite a few people with 1.8t bam engines in the mark 1 and 2 golfs! They don't go to bad at all! :D

Looks like a clean one, very nice.

Throwing an R32 (VR6) lump up front, although sounding nice, would absolutely ruin the handling, which is what makes the mk1/2's so much fun. A full on R32 4wd conversion would be silly money. I would try to keep it simple and as unmolested as possible. There are plenty of light, powerful 4 bangers in the VW range to choose from should the current power plant not peel your spuds.

You are right, an R32 engine would spoil the car and its daily driving ability

Dave is going to just restore the car up to a very nice condition and we are going to add a new leather interior, remove all rust etc, should be a nice car when all finished
