Rear bushes

When I got my Supra M.O.T'd in April I got an advisory notice for "Play in the rear bushes"

I've just picked the notice up to detail which bushes but that's all it says, tried ringing my mate who's garage M.O.T'd the car but he's on holiday in Egypt

Any idea's which bushes it could be? Given the age of the car (14 years) would it be more economical to just replace all of the rear bushes?

I understand that the old bushes can't be replaced as they are spherical bearings and are part of the arm so the whole arms have to be replaced if using OEM parts.

I've had a quick scout on Ebay and came accross the Polyflex bushes which don't seem to be too expensive...

Would they replace all of my old bushes back there?

Does anyone have an idea on price from MR T?

Any help appreciated :)

If I had to guess I'd imagine its the top control arm inner bushes that have let you down but in theory it could be any of the 14 bushes that keep your rear wheels in line.

So with that in mind the bushes you have list will not replace all the bushes found in the rear suspension.

Further to that unless you were prepared to fit a complete poly bush kit, front and rear I'd recommend pin pointing the bushes that need attention and sticking with OE replacement bushes which I believe can be got seperately.

If you do decide the polybush route is for you I'd recommend talking to some of the guys on here (Paul Whiffin, Miko Supra or Dude) before you buy anything privately as some of the bushes are available in a couple of different sizes depending on your car's spec.

Buying the wrong ones would just be a PITA.

I used to replace these, it can be a right ball ache with bolts welding themselves in the insides of the bushes and spending hours playing with cutting discs. Just be aware that it it's the rear top wishbones, powerflex do not supply the bushes for them. The only company I know that will supply those are superpro.

(The thought of working on supra suspension in this weather made a little bit of sick come up.)

I'd find out which ones have the play in 1st as its very easy to get this wrong, it might even be the ball joints in either the upper or lower arms.

Accoring to the garage it was bushes that had play in them, going to see one of the lads from the garage can get the car up on the ramps and check which ones that are at fault.

Did they have 2 guys mot your car then as you need to be under the car while someone trys to move the wheel up down side to side.

If your getting it checked again no problem but get them to have a good look at both ball joints as youll be wasting your money fitting polybushes if there on the way out as well.

My ball joints were okay but the rubber gator had split on 2 of them so it wouldn't have been long before they were gone.

Get the car checked over again to determine exactly which parts are worn, there's a whole lot goes on back there and it could be one of any number of bushes/joints. However if one bush/joint has some play in it, it's likely the rest are not too far behind it in terms of wear.

I would definitely fit only genuine OEM Toyota parts, here's a list of part numbers for everything back there.

52271-14080 Rear Mount Bush x 2

52205-14040 Rear Mount Bush RR-RH x 1

52206-14030 Rear Mount Bush RR-LH x 1

52272-14040 Rear Upper Mount Bush x 1

48770-19025 Rear Upper Arm - RH x 1

48790-19025 Rear Upper Arm - LH x 1

48780-14030 Rear Lower Link x 2

48730-14040 Rear Lower Arm - RH x 1

48740-14070 Rear Lower Arm - LH x 1

48725-14070 Rear Lower Arm Bush x 2

48710-14110 Rear Arm Assembly x 2

48830-14050 Rear drop link - Left x 1

48840-14030 Rear drop link - Right x 1

I got a set of powerflex poly bushes front and rear for £270 about a year ago but they dont come with upper wish bushes for the rear. much cheaper then buying the arms and bushes from mr T. i recently had to replace the camber and toe arms on the near side rear after hitting the rear wheel on a kirb and cost me some where over the £300 pound range so well worth looking into

You are talking about the hole arms and thats not what we talk about we have the arms and just replace the bushes. way cheaper than buying the hole thing :-)

Cheers.

It's almost certainly play in the bushes (really they are spherical bearings but MOT testers call any pivots "bushes"). Please trust me, your best way forward is to buy new Toyota arms from Toyota or Whifbitz, if he has any left. Trying to get the bearings out and a far inferior plastic bush pressed in will make you wish you'd just bought the right things in the first place, and you still end up with the old arms and outer ball joints, which may be the next thing to go.
