RussVVTi6Speed
Strange one this. When I turn the A/C the car start idling horribly, going up and down from 300rpm to then 600rpm each second. This carries on until i turn the a/c off. If i leave it one it continues until there seems to be a cut-off which then just tunrs the a/c off after about 30 seconds. Anyone had this before or indeed know the fix. Would be grateful of your help especially due to the weather at the moment....typical ....lol Thasnks guys
Scooter
can you get your hand down onto the inner section of the pulley? you should be able to turn it with your hand, it will be reasonably stiff, but it could be semi seized..... alternative to that is watch the inner pulley whilst someone else presses the aircon on/off in the car....off it should be stationary on it should audibly 'clunk' and spin at the same rate as the outer pulley

Presumably you should only attempt this with the engine off ! Mike
JamieP
Lol, i can see the a post later saying anyone good a sewing fingers on? Mine does this a little , My idle drops from about 900rpm to 800rpm when the aircon is on, is that normal?
Kirk
Yup its normal but it shouldnt be hunting for idle between 300-600 When you switch it on you should here the clutch engaging but as said above it could be semi seized
gaz1
the aircon will make the idle drop, but it should not keep fluctuating between high and low
RussVVTi6Speed
Yeah it goes high and low fluctuating, although I do remember when the a/c did work my idle speed went up not down. Scooter- If it is semi seized, what would you recomend to get it going again?
Kirk
Bit of lube spray and a hammer
trinitom
on my car the revs go up with ac on, and not down.
nevins
Definitely normal, when the clutch engages the engine then has more load from this causing a slight decrease in rpm, Although the engine management should adjust for this slightly. Matt Harwood
Revs should increase when the A/C kicks in. The ECU compensates for the extra load on the engine and increases the idle via the IACV. Aftermarket ECU's may not have been set up to do this, in which case the idle will drop when the A/C pump kicks in. I have no idea about the hunting, but tending to agree with Scooter about a siezing/faulty A/C pump.

RussVVTi6Speed
Coming back to this issue now as I may need to sell the car soon, and want it in full working order and as immaculate as it deserves to be. What should I use to free the pump? cheers
Chris Wilson
Free the pump? A decent hacksaw sent in a cake, a good barrister, a national petition? Not sure I follow you, is the air con compressor seized or something?

Chris Wilson
If it's seized it's usually a scrapper, best to find a good used one, but they usually seize due to dirt or moisture getting into them. Chasing a U/S air con system can get very expensive, very fast.

RussVVTi6Speed
I had the same problem... it was dirty ICV... maybe deserves to check that out... Would this happen, surely if the ICV had an issue it would be a probelm with idling all the time not just with the A/C on?
EMPEROR
Well idle with no AC was almost perfect with me, just when the AC was ON it was making problems with idle. Your case might be different, but still an idea to check...
d_d
i thought this was normal, looks like ill have to investigate mine now
