SBDJ
I'm having an issue with the Supra whereby when I turn left I get a sort of very loud knocking with some grinding. The noise sounds very much like it's coming from the front offside but I could be mistaken. It doesn't appear to knock going over bumps. I was having my front tyres replaced the other day and we had a look around the suspension. We couldn't see anything obviously worn and couldn't introduce play anywhere. I nipped up the Subframe bolts just to be sure about them, but they were OK already. I do need to check the rear suspension just in case I'm mistaken about the noise though. Before I start randomly replacing things in the hope of finding this I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? FWIW I'm trying to get the budget together to give the suspension a good refresh as she's now done 230000 miles. I would rather prioritise this fault - both for safety reasons and a looming MOT
Scott
Immediate thought is the inner arch? Mine wasn't attached properly when I got it and on full lock it would rub and pull on one of the liners making a noise similar to what you describe. Easy to check, put it into full lock then have a feel round the back
SBDJ
Definately not liners rubbing; I checked that already. Thanks though
SBDJ
Noise has now started occurring with only the slightest of left turn...
ellis
My exact same noise was a seized brake caliper on the passenger front. That would be a good place to start as its not apparent without taking off the wheel and having a poke inside. My bet is on this for sure. Dnk
The cheapest route in my opinion would be to get it on a ramp and get a proper mechanic to go over the car, you say its done 230,000 miles is that on its original parts or have some items been changed ? That would be a good place to start as its not apparent without taking off the wheel and having a poke inside. My bet is on this for sure. I'll check that out, thanks. Not sure why a seized caliper would make that kind of noise though. I still have plenty of braking power and brake balance seems fine. The cheapest route in my opinion would be to get it on a ramp and get a proper mechanic to go over the car, you say its done 230,000 miles is that on its original parts or have some items been changed ? I'll be getting up on a ramp shortly and going over it with someone this weekend hopefully. So far everyone who has looked at it has said shocks but that they couldn't be sure without taking them off the car. 230000 miles on original parts, she's done fantastically well IMHO, hence why I'm starting to save for all new suspension all round

SBDJ
Filter for reservoir is clear, fluid is good and at correct level. Noise doesn't occur when stationary and turning wheel, only when moving. I did notice that it also happens when reversing and the wheel pointing the other way. I might have now found the cause anyway; something stupid! Edited May 27, 2010 by SBDJ (see edit history)
