fitting a fan to BMW 3 series

This is a little off topic.

My 2002 plate 3 series BMW aircon has stopped working.

This is because the air con pusher fan (elctric fan at front of engine) is faulty.

these fan/cowling cost £200-250 depending where you buy from.

My question is, can a normal elctric fan like the ones used for cooling your radiator etc be used instead as these can be bought for as little as £30 brand new.

Is there something special about the BMW front fan that dictates the high price?

No, the BMW fan has it own resister pack that controls the variable fan speed.
