Scutch0
Hi guys I need a little advice my speedo on my j spec na is being very erratic at times. There seems to be no pattern to it, it just starts ficking around up to 120 odd... No I've done a bit of Reading and the general opinion seems to point to my speedo converter, but just replacing that seems to be a minefield of possible problems, what suggestions can you give me as to what to do, as I can't afford to be shelling out £100 on the Thor converter, but I am concerned sticking a eBay job in there is a bad move. The guy before me had the odometer connected to the converter also if that makes a difference!
VIL
Before going down the converter route (which it probably is) check its not a bad solder on the wiring. I had a similar problem that was solved by checking all the solder joints.
nevins
Had the same problem the other day, I spoke to keron and he sent me one down, fitted it and not got a problem any more mate. As above, if you are going to be checking the soldered joints you might as well swap it out at the same time.

If you cant afford £100 to fix the speedo, what will you do when you need new O2 sensors or Tyres or Break Disks/Pads and god forbid the sticky caliper that we all get once during supra ownership!! Sort of what I thought, but I was too polite to say it. Everyone's circumstances are different though. You could just remove the speedo converter and have the speedo read in kph for now until you get funds together to buy a replacement one. About the cheap ebay ones: buy with caution. Remember "Buy cheap, but twice". Edited May 17, 2010 by stevie_b (see edit history)

Thanks for the imput guys I'll check the soldered connection and maybe just change it for a cheapo one until I can afford the Thor one... I don't want to put it back to kph because that'll mean re wiring the odometer, and I can't see the wire to re connect it!
stevie_b
TBH I wouldn't bother spending £20 on a cheap converter if you'll be buying a better one a few months later. That's just throwing good money after bad. I would just leave it as it is, and drive carefully to avoid getting speeding tickets.
