amp meter wired wrong

Right then today I was doing some work to the car and decided to remove the pillar pod. Iv hated this since getting the car, as it looked dumb. I drive an n/a so don't want a pillar pod with an amp meter and voltage gauge. When removing them I noticed that who ever fitted it done it wrong.

They had reversed the wires. Now no fuses had blown, the gauge just did not work. I have removed it now, and now when the engine starts the alarm chirps twice. It did not do this before, also now some of my speedo cluster lights don't work. Also the engine now idles alot smoother. My question is , how come it did not bring up any warning lights or blow fuses.

the ammeter sits in-line from the alternator to the battery on the charging feed - so no fuses needed, and not even related to any warning lights. Speedo cluster lights could be a coincidence, or you may have disturbed something when you (i assume) removed the guages.
