I would take up something like rock climbing. That strengthens your fingers no end, and does wonders for arm and shoulder strength. Hold yourself on the wall a little longer to get used to holding the weight. I do a bit of climbing at a wall in central London and it does a fair bit for strength and fitness.

 

Might be worth a go. You could even build a small climbing wall in your garden if you have the space. You buy the handholds from a shop and screw them properly to the wall and off you go.
