Contract phone broken.

Got my Satio on a 24 months contract about 8 months ago. Now I'm getting an iffy touchscreen! It just went suddenly and now is pretty useless apart from to answer calls.

Am I gonna end up paying? Assuming of course that an update doesn't cure it (I'll try it tonight). Will Sony Ericsson fix it? Can I claim Phones4U to replace it?

Phone insurance only covers accidental damage or loss or theft etc. And I'm covered for all that through my bank account.

I don't mind staying on my contract, I wouldn't have taken it out if I wasn't happy with the phone and all that. I just can't afford to get it fixed so I'm wondering if phones are exempt from all normal laws of buying things because of the funny way contracts are done? For example when you buy something you're covered for up to 6 years for repairs and stuff, but because I haven't actually 'bought' it and it's only assumed that the cost of the monthly contract is related to the cost of the phone - there's nothing in the contract saying that I'm paying for the phone over 24 months - it was a 'free' phone so am I still covered for them repairing it?

It could be a firmware issue. Take it to the shop and they should replace it free of charge if they can't fix it as it's well within warranty (minimum 1 year).

From your description of the problem your having it sounds like the digitizer has gone. Should be covered under sonys 2 year warranty.

 

Is it physically damaged ie LCD cracked?

PS They are known to have touch screen problems. We stopped selling them for this reason.

Screen is OK, although I've almost broken it trying to get it press something!! It acts as if part of the screen is always held down so it won't input other things.

 

SE have sent me a form to fill in and send it back to them. 7-10 days though.
