Crazybassist
Hi, I'm very very new to the world of turbo'd engines, the closest I've come to it is a TDi patrol! I've decided though that as I'm due to turn 25 in the summer it is time to live my boyhood dream and get a supra TT! Trouble is I live on an island where the only fuel available is 95 RON I've done some reading on here and come to realise that it aint good for a BPU car (which is what I want - POWEEEER!) Is it expensive to get the ecu remapped for lower octane fuel? Or would I be ok running a UK car on 95? Sorry for being such a newbie, but you've gotta start sometime
ellis
It would be OK with a UK spec TT as they were designed to be run on 95 from the get go.
stevie_b
A UK car is fine on 95 RON IIRC. It must be, because that's the standard fuel in the UK. The Japanese have higher-octane fuel as standard, hence imported cars (especially TTs) needing higher octane fuel.
Crazybassist
That's Ok if I can find a cheap enough UK car at the time. What's the difference between UK and J-spec engines anyway? Is it just engine management? Or is it something more mechanical? (really showing how little I know now ) Cheers guys!
dr_jekyll
if you are not upping the boost how would it make a difference. dose the uk and jdm have the same compression ratio? do they run the sam ignition timeing? the higher ron just means the fuel is more resistand to pre ignition under compresion, is this correct? so these things in mind what are the differences. obviously running higher boost levels will require a higher ron fuel to prevent pre ignition but on a stock setup dose it make much difference? Thorin
UK or j-spec would be fine on 95 RON. You'd probably be slightly down on power as the ECU would pull more timing, but it should be fine. It's once you start raising the boost that I wouldn't be happy running 95.
Chris Wilson
Do you never come off this "island"? I can't see the need for much boost on an island so small it doesn't have "proper" fuel, and when you come off it, surely you can get 98 octane? You could buy Avgas and mix it, or a drum of race fuel and mix it, or even a drum of toluene or two.

I don't get off it very much at the moment (think it was last year sometime when I last escaped!) There are some good mile long straights where I've managed to almost top out my ZX-9R, so good spots for boosted cars. There's also a quarter mile drag race held at the airport each year (we have one of the longest runways in the UK btw!) But as long as I keep it standard, a J-spec should be OK? That opens up a lot more options UK cars are to hard to come by. Edited May 11, 2010 by Crazybassist (see edit history)

Chris Wilson
In that case a J-Spec should be fine. Just treat it to good fuel as and when you can.

I'm on the Isle of Lewis, we used to have BP and Esso, but now all we seem to get is National and we have to pay 128.9p a litre for the stuff! Half the guys out here work offshore to get the oil, but end up blowing all their cash on fuel bills. Anyway, rant over.
