Matt H
The UFO's what? Its engine? Its shape? I didn't say the UFO's something I simply said, UFO's. It's an exception, like there are many others.
ellis
I didn't say the UFO's something I simply said, UFO's. It's an exception, like there are many others. That's not an exception though, that's part of the genral rule. The UFO's door fell off. The car's door fell off. The van's door fell off. All possessives, not plurals. You can have a plural possessive: The UFOs' engines all exploded at the same time!
Matt H
Don't take it from me then! http://www.grammar-monster.com/lessons/apostrophes_show_plural_of_abbreviations.htm http://wps.ablongman.com/long_faigley_penguinhb_1/0,7325,506336-,00.html Abbreviations are exceptions to the general rules Ellis. I'm not saying it should be that way Elis, I'd be happy with UFOs, it's just the way it is!
ellis
Contractions are different as they are the shortening by combination of two words: Is not = isn't Do not = don't Weird freak = Carl S That sort of thing!
martini
I didn't say the UFO's something I simply said, UFO's. It's an exception, like there are many others. No that's wrong. As people are trying to tell you, UFO is an acronym and therefore the plural is UFOs. CDs not CD's, TVs not TV's...

Snooze
Now - while Matt is actually wrong with UFOs, he's almost got something. It is generally considered acceptable (note - wording here - it is still not considered a hard grammatical rule) to use an apostrophe for pluralising abbreviations which contain punctuation. So "Ph.D.'s" "e.g.'s" would be okay, etc.

A couple of those in link 1 are wrong! 7s and 2s would be simply that, as would 1,000s. Apostrophes here are wrong, wrong and, for effect, wrong! ellis
Surely, it is Carl'S, is not it? Now I'm confused! CarlS's's's' weird? Might be right!
