Homer
Noticed something a bit different: The chassis fan is hardly getting enough power to start spinning (needs a flick to get it going), the LED light on the PSU is flickering, the LED of the GFX card is flickering, seems that it's hardly supplying enough power for the PC to start. Not sure if that is because of a motherboard or PSU fault, but worth mentioning...

If its a cheapo one then replace it anyway, they only provide about 1/3 of what they state they will. Two potentially faulty motherboards and 1/1+ memory sticks..... Can you try the RAM in another machine and get memtest ran on it?
Homer
Well, it turned out to be a faulty PSU (as suggested by a few of you guys!). It was an OCZ 600 watt unit which wasn't exactly cheap when I bought it last year. Replaced it with a 650watt one, but as soon as I tried to start it the house fuse for the living room tripped out, so I can only conclude that it is poor wiring in that room that started all these problems in the first place. Now using a plug from another curcuit and all seems fine So, next job is a little unexpected - rewire the living room! BTW, anyone need a brand new ASUS 775 motherboard? Only used for 5 minutes
