pedrosixfour
Hey folks. I've been searching since last night for the answer to this but I'm getting nowhere. I'm fitting a 4.27 crownwheel & pinion to my torsen diff tonight. I've read up on rebuilding the diff and am quietly confident I'll get the crownwheel to pinion contact within the proper tolerences. All the literature however only seems to cover open diffs and highlights the adjustment that might be necessary between the pinion gears and the side gears in the actual differential cradle. But I can't find any mention of possible adjustment of a torsen set-up. Am I to believe there is no adjustment necessary due to it's almost wormgear-like design? When I removed the backplate from the diff to initally inspect it prior to disassembly I noticed that the side gears which transfer the power to the drive shafts seem to have room to move slightly within the housing. Depending on which direction torque is applied to the companion flange the side gears either push apart towards the drive shafts or pull inwards toward the centre of the diff. Whats this really amounts to is a small amount of play in the gears between applying power to the input shaft and power reaching the output shafts. Is this normal for a torsen diff? Thanks for any guidance. Damien.
pedrosixfour
I'll take that as a "we don't know" then shall I? Not to worry, it's all back together now as it was so it can't be that far out.
Chris Wilson
It's normal and not adjustable. If you are serious about good traction get a proper plate type LSD for the unit.

Thanks Chris, I had a feeling I'd be waiting until you spotted this before I got an answer. As for the plate type diff, my first sponsor will be the first to hear your recommendations!
