paulrenn
Hi, Does anyone have any good advice to diagnose handling/tracking problem. My 944 feels really nervous and the front will hunt around depending on the road surface, and feels like something on the front left corner is a little amis. When I got the car, the tyres were pretty knackered and unevenly worn, and it wandered really badly then. I'm not sure if the tyres were used just for shipping it to me or whether they had been on the car a long time. There was a really bad vibration at speed, around 60mph and upwards. Since then, I had replacement rims and winter tyres - result, much less vibration, but still there. Now I have the original rims with a decent set of summer tyres (not new, but at least they are all evenly worn). Vibration is still less, but steering still feels really light and the front is wanting to hunt around all the time, I can feel the steering wheel attempting to go left and right quite forcefully at times. Car is in good condition, with only 77,000 kms from new in 1990, so mechanically it "should" be quite OK but you never know. So how to proceed. My first instinct is to get a wheel alignment done, but any other advice? Front rod ties?
Tricky-Ricky
Sounds primarily like the toe is out to me although it could well be coupled with something else, but i would be inclined to think its too much toe in, that will make it feel on the nervous side. wheels-inmotion
Get an image of the chassis positions, this can cost as little as £30 and at least you have an idea of what direction to take.
edinlexusV8
Not sure your model has wheel bearings but I am pretty sure it should. If the wheel bearings are out you will experience some vibrations esp at higher speeds > 60mph. Does it feel different/better when you turn in right or left at that speed? paulrenn
Thanks fellas. I think I'll take it down for a wheel alignment and see what happens. Can double check the bearings at the same place.
