stevie_b
A very good friend of mine who owns a W-reg 1.4 mk2 Clio has just had the cambelt snap whilst driving it. Both him and I are aware of the kind of damage that a broken cambelt does to an interference engine, which Google reckons it is. Is the cheapest course of action a replacement head/engine? He's self-employed and money is very tight for him.
Robzki
Had a cambelt snap on one of my cars a few years ago, google reckoned it was a interference engine. missus was driving, doing about 60mph, she said it sounded as if she'd tried to put it in reverse..... Put a new cambelt on and started up fine, had a veeeery slight misfire at idle, but noone would have noticed. Car went on for another 60k cheap fix for £20. is worth a try if you're mech' inclined. but at least do a compression test. I know I was lucky, but you never know till you try. stevie_b
Good idea Rob. I guess the compression test would need a new cambelt fitted before it could be carried out?
Robzki
Yeah, afraid so. If not you will just cause more damage. I'm always try the cheapest option first If your mate decide on a new head/engine. I would likely opt for a s/h lump from a breakers. Probably plenty of them about. but being favoured by the boy racer brigade. they may be thrashed, so choose carefully. If his car is low mileage/v clean then I would def' repair if not just cut his losses and get a new runaround. Sounds harsh but its getting on a bit now and poss' better to cut his losses.... good luck Rob
sams
If this happened a week ago I would of sold you a 1.4 engine for 60£, from a Clio mk2 RL and it was cammed with bigger carb and equal length manifold would been included, just typical it was on eBay for 2weeks no interest, so I scrapped her last week
stevie_b
Sound advice I think Rob. sams: ahh, that's a shame. Never mind.
