Swampy442
Im not entirely sure the actual gearbox is broken, and its a moot point really cos Im changing it for a manual anyway but Id still like to know and it may well be an HKS built box. Car is an Aristo with a big single conversion. OK symptoms I have are :- When cold all is fine apart from when Drive is selected it slams in hard. I drove 40 odd miles at 70 with no issues at all, upchanges and down changes were fine. Then I lost drive so stopped and turned the engine off, waited a couple of mins and started it again and all was well Lost drive again, did as above but accompanied with a flashing o/d symbol on the dash. Then the third time same again but this time there was a noise that can only be described as when you have a manual car and crunch a gear change, it sounds like that, like 2 gears trying to mesh. But not all the time. And sometimes youll have intermittent, jerky drive. If you leave it to cool its ok but when it gets some heat built up its tarraaa froward motion. Im going to change the oil, and the filter as a precaution as the box runs really hot but if anyone else has ideas Im all ears Edited May 1, 2010 by Swampy442 (see edit history)
GreaseMonkey
Just a thought, Could be a Shift Solenoid playing up/ worn Solenoid or connector. Poss where it gets hot, increase in electrical resistance/ poor connection contact opening up with the heat causing it to malfunction?. Swampy442
Its possible, the wiring has been molested quite badly, but all the gears are missing so I dont think all 4 solenoids are dodgy. What Ive found so far is the fluid return line to the gearbox is blocking up.
sdistc
I still think the best solution is to take it apart for a visual inspection by an expert. I seriously doubt that HKS would have built this, and even if so there wouldn't be any ground-breaking technology (after all, most billet parts are uncommon even now). Swampy442
When it comes off Andy its getting binned, I cant afford the hundreds of pounds to overhaul a box Im never going to use again. Taking the sump off though so maybe that will shed some light
sdistc
Well, if it's gonna get chucked... I might take it I'll give you a nominal "storage fee" until I have a place to put it, of course
JustGav
Would this be DB's old car... Remember Dan the Man had this car, and I suspect he rewired the gearbox side so that it didn't have the additional clutch packs... ie controlled on the more traditional 3 wire setup... Swampy442
Yeah its the same car Gav. Ive heard the story of this Dan character and his rewire job. I dont understand exactly what he did or why, and it doesnt matter as the box is getting changed, I just want to be able to drive it and get it home.
