The fact is the government needs a certain amount of money and if we stop buying fuel then tax in other areas will go up to compensate for it. We will pay it one way or another!

 

Absolutely, and due to the current level of government debt we shouldn't expect any significant tax cuts for a few years.

morrisons and asda fuel is cheap for a reason, it got all sorts of crap mixed into it.

 

Maybe "branded" fuels have extra additives in them, but I don't believe that cheaper fuels have "crap" added to them.

If the cheaper supermarket fuels are inferior, they must either:

1) be cut with a filler additive. I too find this very hard to believe, or

2) be a later (and less potent) product of the refining process, a bit like extra virgin olive oil vs "ordinary" olive oil.

 

The lack of additives that might be added to BP/Shell-branded fuels might help them burn cleaner, but I doubt cars' engines, ECUs etc rely on their presence.

 

Personally, I think it's just clever spin and marketing by the oil companies in how they market their own forecourts.
